Chapter 9 - The Rooftop Standoff

The wind howled across the hospital roof, tearing at my hair and chilling my sweat-soaked scrubs.
Jackson looked like a complete stranger holding a gun to his own mother's head.
Lorraine's face was swollen and purple, her clothes torn and stained with dried blood.
She looked at me with eyes full of deep regret and absolute terror.
"I am so sorry, Emily," Lorraine sobbed, her voice barely a whisper in the wind. "I ruined everything."
"Shut up, Mom," Jackson snapped, his grip tightening on the collar of her ruined shirt.
He turned his desperate, wild eyes toward me and demanded that I hand over the USB drive.
"You don't want to do this, Jackson," I pleaded, holding Mia tightly behind my legs to shield her.
"I have no choice, Emily!" he screamed, waving the gun erratically in the air. "They will kill me if I don't give it to them."
He confessed that he never wanted a family; he only married me because the syndicate needed him to have a boring, respectable cover.
Mia and I were nothing but props in his sick, twisted play to remain invisible to federal authorities.
Hearing the truth shattered the last remaining pieces of my broken heart into dust.
"You are a coward," I told him, my voice completely steady despite the chaos around me.
"Give me the drive, Emily, or I will push her off this roof," he threatened, dragging Lorraine closer to the precarious ledge.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small, titanium flash drive, holding it up in the moonlight.
I knew that giving him the drive meant we lost all our leverage and they would kill us anyway.
I took a deliberate step toward the edge of the roof, holding the drive out over the dark, empty void.
"If you shoot, I drop it, and your bosses will never get their money," I bluffed, praying he would hesitate.
Jackson's eyes widened in panic, his gun wavering as he realized I held his entire life in my hand.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door to the stairwell burst open with a deafening crash.
The younger police officer from the house sprinted onto the roof, his service weapon drawn and aimed.
I thought he was here to finish the job for the syndicate and kill us all.
Instead, he leveled his weapon directly at my husband's chest and shouted a clear warning.
"Drop the weapon, Jackson, or I will drop you," the officer commanded with absolute authority.
Jackson panicked and swung his gun away from his mother, aiming it directly at the officer's head.

The younger officer did not hesitate for a single second.
He fired two rapid shots, hitting Jackson squarely in the right shoulder and spinning him to the gravel roof.
