Chapter 1 - The Blind Trust

The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4B swung open, and the bailiff ushered us inside. The room was stark, smelling of lemon polish and old paper. Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense woman with sharp eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, sat at the bench reviewing our file.
Julian practically swaggered to the petitioner’s table, pulling out a chair for Victoria before sitting down himself. He looked like a man who had already won. According to the prenuptial agreement we had signed five years ago, I was entitled to a modest payout, while Julian walked away with the lion's share of his rapidly growing tech startup, Apex Solutions.
My attorney, Marcus, pulled out my chair. I sat down heavily, resting my hands on my swollen stomach.
"Are both parties ready to proceed?" Judge Harrison asked, peering over her glasses.
"Yes, Your Honor," Julian said smoothly. "We’ve agreed to the terms of the standard dissolution. I’m prepared to sign the settlement and transfer the agreed-upon alimony to Clara’s account by the end of the business day."
Victoria smirked, a tiny, triumphant twitch of her lips. She thought she was inheriting a tech empire.
"Not so fast, Your Honor," Marcus said, standing up and unbuttoning his suit jacket. "My client is prepared to sign the divorce decree today. However, we are submitting an addendum regarding the division of assets, specifically concerning the ownership of Apex Solutions."
Julian scoffed. "We have a prenup. Clara has no claim to my company."
"Normally, that would be true," Marcus said smoothly, sliding a thick stack of documents across the table to Julian’s lawyer. "But Mr. Hayes seems to have forgotten where his initial seed funding came from three years ago. It came from a venture capital firm called Vanguard Holdings."
Julian frowned. "Yes. So?"
"So," Marcus continued, projecting his voice so it echoed in the silent courtroom, "Vanguard Holdings is not an independent firm. It is a blind trust established by Clara’s late grandfather. A trust that Clara took sole legal control of on her twenty-fifth birthday."
The color drained from Julian's face so fast he looked ill.
"Pursuant to the original funding contract," Marcus said, turning to the judge, "Vanguard Holdings retains an eighty percent equity stake in Apex Solutions, including voting rights. Clara doesn't just have a claim to your company, Julian. She owns it. She is your boss. And as of 8:00 a.m. this morning, Vanguard Holdings has initiated a hostile takeover."

Victoria gasped, her manicured hand flying to her mouth. Julian stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.
I picked up the pen, signed the divorce decree with a steady hand, and smiled. "I believe we're done here, Your Honor."
