Chapter 5 - The Race Against Fire

I stared intensely at the photograph of the bloody message, my mind shifting completely into a cold, tactical focus.

The kidnappers wanted the original prototype of my father's most advanced drone guidance system.

They knew I was the only person alive who possessed the biometric access codes to the company's deepest underground vault.

Vance frantically tried to stop me as I aggressively loaded a fresh magazine into the stolen pistol.

He warned me that breaking into the corporate headquarters right now was practically a suicide mission.

I ignored his desperate warnings and forcefully took the keys to one of his unmarked tactical vehicles.

I promised him I would secure the dangerous prototype and get the innocent girl back, no matter the personal cost.

I sped through the heavy city traffic, weaving dangerously between innocent civilian cars to save precious time.

When I finally arrived at Bennett Meridian Systems, the massive glass building looked deceptively peaceful in the afternoon sun.

I bypassed the main entrance and slipped silently into the restricted underground parking garage.

I expertly neutralized two heavily armed security contractors near the service elevator without making a single sound.

I used their stolen access card to ride the hidden maintenance elevator down to the sub-basement level.

This was where my father had secretly built the secure vault that my greedy mother could never access.

I placed my hand firmly on the biometric scanner and whispered the verbal passcode my father had taught me.

The heavy steel vault door hissed loudly and slid open, revealing rows of highly sensitive military servers.

I immediately walked toward the central pedestal where the priceless drone prototype was safely housed in protective glass.

Before I could reach it, the heavy vault door slammed shut behind me and the magnetic locks engaged heavily.

The lights flickered out, replacing the bright room with a sinister, pulsing red emergency glow.

A calm, highly synthesized voice echoed loudly through the vault's intercom system.

It announced that the highly destructive thermal purge protocol had been manually activated by the CEO.

Highly flammable liquid began rapidly spraying from the ceiling vents directly onto the expensive servers.

A digital countdown clock illuminated violently on the main wall, starting ominously from sixty seconds.

My mother had purposely lured me into the secure vault to burn me alive alongside the only remaining evidence of her treason.

The countdown hit forty-five seconds when I suddenly heard a desperate, muffled cry coming from the darkest corner of the vault.

Major Hayes was chained heavily to the wall, soaked in gasoline, and holding a ticking explosive device perfectly wired to his chest.
