Chapter 4 - The Friction Pen

The LLC listed on the transfer deed was named "Sterling Vanguard Holdings."
My mind raced as I recognized the corporate entity.
It was an offshore shell company that my late father had supposedly dissolved ten years ago.
Brandon was not just trying to steal my new distribution center.
He was using a ghost company from my own family's past to legally launder the assets without triggering the IRS.
I kept my hand trembling, playing the role of the poisoned, confused wife flawlessly.
“Just sign on the dotted line, sweetheart,” Brandon urged, his eyes gleaming with greedy anticipation.
I did not use the silver pen he handed me.
Instead, I clumsily dropped his pen on the rug and pulled my own custom fountain pen from my blazer pocket.
It was loaded with a specialized thermal-sensitive friction ink that completely vanished when exposed to heat.
I scribbled my signature across all thirty pages, leaning heavily against the cushions.
Brandon snatched the paperwork away the exact second my pen left the final page.
“Rest now, Madison, I will handle everything from here,” he said, practically skipping out the front door to his car.
The moment I heard his engine fade down the driveway, my weakness vanished entirely.
I stood up, walked into my private study, and locked the heavy mahogany doors behind me.
I pulled up a secure video conference with my forensic accountant, a ruthless woman named Evelyn.
“Trace every single transaction connected to Sterling Vanguard Holdings for the last decade,” I commanded.
Evelyn’s fingers flew across her keyboard as she bypassed the banking firewalls.
“Madison, this shell company was reactivated three months ago, heavily funded by an anonymous wire transfer,” she reported.
“Who authorized the reactivation?” I demanded, needing a name to destroy.
Evelyn hesitated, her face paling on the high-definition screen.
“The authorization signature belongs to Marcus Thorne, your Chief Financial Officer.”
I sank into my leather chair, completely paralyzed by the betrayal.
Marcus was my mentor, the man who walked me down the aisle at my wedding, and my father’s oldest friend.
My husband and my best friend were just the disposable pawns.
The true mastermind trying to steal my billionaire empire was the man managing my entire fortune.

Suddenly, a violent pounding erupted against my locked study door.
“Open the door, Madison, we know you are faking it,” Nicole’s voice sneered from the hallway, followed by the heavy sound of a loaded shotgun racking a shell.
