Chapter 1 - The Hidden Camera

The video feed finally snapped into crystal clear focus.
I expected to see my son playing quietly with his toys while my husband plotted my ruin.
Instead, I saw Ethan backed into the corner of our expansive living room.
His small hands were trembling as he held his iPad up like a shield.
Brandon was towering over him with a face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage.
“Give me that device right now, you little brat,” Brandon hissed, lunging forward.
Nicole stood casually in the background, examining her perfectly manicured nails as if child abuse was simply a minor inconvenience.
Ethan tried to dart around the heavy oak coffee table, but Brandon was too fast.
My husband grabbed my seven-year-old son by the collar of his shirt and violently yanked the iPad from his grip.
I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle the scream building in my throat.
“You like spying on adults?” Brandon snarled, dragging Ethan toward the basement door.
Nicole finally looked up and sighed in annoyance.
“Just lock him in the cellar closet until we finish the paperwork, Brandon.”
I watched in silent horror as the man I married shoved my crying child into the dark basement and slammed the heavy door shut.
The metallic click of the deadbolt echoed through the camera’s audio feed.
I shoved my phone into my pocket and sprinted silently out of the kitchen toward the back garden.
I could not confront them in the house without risking my son’s immediate safety.
I ran through the freezing rain until I reached the small, ground-level window that looked directly into the basement closet.
My hands were bleeding as I frantically clawed at the frozen latch to pry the window open.
I whispered his name into the dark, damp space, promising Mommy was here to save him.

When I finally shined my phone’s flashlight through the dirty glass, the closet was completely empty.
The only thing left on the cold concrete floor was a massive pool of fresh, crimson blood.
