Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

The emergency board meeting was called for eight o'clock the following morning.

I walked into the massive glass-walled conference room, my tailored suit pristine, my expression entirely unreadable.

Sitting at the far end of the long mahogany table was Marcus Thorne, wearing a smug, predatory smile.

Beside him sat Claire, dressed in a sharp business suit, looking like a queen who had just conquered a kingdom.

Her brothers and uncles filled the remaining seats, acting as silent, intimidating muscle.

Thorne steepled his fingers and leaned forward, adopting a tone of fake sympathy.

"Daniel, let's make this easy," Thorne began, sliding a thick legal binder across the table.

"Claire is carrying my child, which invalidates your little post-nuptial trap regarding alimony."

He explained that under state law, a pregnant spouse's financial assets are subject to emergency protection orders.

"Furthermore, during the panic yesterday, I graciously bought out the phantom company shares you awarded to the Collins family over the years."

Thorne tapped the binder triumphantly.

"Combined with Claire's marital claim, I now possess a sixty-percent controlling interest in Whitaker Construction."

Claire sneered at me, her eyes flashing with vindictive joy.

"You should have just stayed a broke handyman, Daniel," she mocked. "Now, we are going to liquidate your company and leave you with absolutely nothing."

Thorne demanded I sign the immediate transfer of executive power, or he would have security physically throw me out of my own building.

I didn't reach for the pen.

I didn't panic, and I certainly didn't beg.

Instead, I let out a low, dark chuckle that echoed off the glass walls.

I pressed a button under the table, unlocking the boardroom doors.

My lead corporate attorney, a silver-haired shark named Harrison, walked in carrying a single, thin folder.

"Mr. Thorne, your hostile takeover is built on a fundamental misunderstanding of corporate structure," Harrison announced loudly.

I leaned forward, locking eyes with the man who tried to steal my life.

"I never took Whitaker Construction public, Marcus," I said softly.

"The shares you bought from the Collins family yesterday were non-voting, synthetic equity tied to a shell company I created for tax write-offs."

Thorne's smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sudden, frantic confusion.

"You just spent twelve million dollars of your own capital buying useless paper from criminals," I stated.

"And as for the marital claim," Harrison added, dropping a stack of documents on the table.

"Claire signed the post-nup heavily intoxicated, and the subsequent fraud she committed with your help voids any spousal entitlement."

Thorne shot out of his chair, his face red with rage, turning to glare at Claire.

"You told me you verified the corporate structure!" Thorne screamed at her, abandoning his polished persona.

Before Claire could utter a single defense, the boardroom doors swung open again.

Two federal agents in dark windbreakers stepped into the room, their eyes fixed directly on Marcus Thorne.
