Chapter 10 - EXACTLY WHAT I DESERVED

The cemetery was quiet, the autumn wind rustling the bright orange leaves of the ancient oak trees.

I walked up the grassy hill to Arthur’s massive marble headstone. I didn't bring expensive lilies or orchids. I brought a single, simple white rose. I laid it gently on the cold stone.

“We did it, Arthur,” I whispered, pulling my cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders.

I wasn't the same woman who had served him drinks at that charity gala. I was no longer drowning in bills, terrified of the world, and shrinking myself to fit into rooms where I wasn't wanted.

I was the Chairwoman of a four-billion-dollar foundation. I had used the funds to restore the pensions Julian had stolen, securing the retirements of thousands of workers. I was respected, feared, and entirely independent.

But as I stood over his grave, the money didn't matter.

I thought about his smile. The way he asked if my feet hurt. The quiet mornings drinking coffee on the patio, simply enjoying the silence of being understood by someone else.

His children thought I married him for his fortune. And maybe, in the very beginning, the safety of his wealth was what made me say yes. But Arthur knew the truth. He knew that I had learned to love the man, not the bank account.

He didn't leave me the box to test me. He left it to empower me. To turn the scared girl he married into the warrior he knew I could be.

He made sure you got exactly what you deserved.

I touched the cold marble of his headstone one last time.

“Thank you,” I whispered to the wind.

I turned and walked back down the hill, my head held high, stepping into a future that was finally, entirely, my own.
