Chapter 1 - THE VELVET BOX

The silence in the attorney’s boardroom was thick enough to choke on.
Arthur’s eldest son, Julian, leaned forward, his custom-tailored suit straining against his shoulders. Beside him, his younger brother, Pierce, was already glaring at me with the kind of unrestrained hatred usually reserved for murderers.
“Open it,” Julian demanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl. “Let’s see what the gold digger managed to squeeze out of a dying man.”
I ignored him. My hands were trembling as I reached across the polished mahogany table and touched the black velvet box. It was heavy. My heart hammered against my ribs as I unclasped the small brass latch and flipped the lid open.
There was no multi-million dollar check. There were no deeds to the Manhattan penthouse or the estate in the Hamptons.
Inside rested a tarnished, heavy iron key, a small black USB flash drive, and a folded piece of heavy cardstock.
Pierce let out a sharp, barking laugh. “A key to a storage unit? Is that it? He left you his old golf clubs?”
I didn't answer. I pulled out the cardstock and unfolded it. It was Arthur’s handwriting—elegant, sharp, and unmistakably his.
My dearest Clara, if you are reading this, I am gone. And if you are reading this in front of my sons, they are likely expecting to inherit an empire. They won't. The key opens the door to my past. The drive contains the truth of my present. Take them, leave the room, and trust no one. Especially my blood. You will get exactly what you deserve.
I folded the note quickly, but Julian was faster. He lunged across the table, his hand wrapping viciously around my wrist.
“What does it say?” Julian snarled.
“Mr. Vance!” The attorney, Mr. Sterling, slammed his hands on the desk. “Release her immediately, or I will have security escort you out and call the police for assault.”
May you like
Julian glared at Sterling, then down at me. Slowly, he released his grip, a cruel smile forming on his lips. “You really think you won, don't you? You think a piece of junk metal and a flash drive mean anything? We have the corporate lawyers. We have the board. By tomorrow morning, you’ll be back to pouring cheap champagne for people like me.”
I scooped the key and the drive into my purse, standing up with a newfound, icy composure. “We’ll see about that, Julian.”
