Chapter 9 - The Collapse

I crawled frantically through the narrow, dusty metal shaft, the sounds of battle fading slightly behind me.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as I clutched the remote detonator tightly in my sweaty palm.

I knew Carl was buying me time with his own life, a final act of twisted redemption.

The shaft angled steeply upward, and I hauled myself forward, desperate to see the night sky.

Suddenly, a massive shudder ripped through the metal ductwork.

The mercenaries must have used an explosive to breach Carl's heavy cover.

I reached a small metal grate, kicked it out with my boots, and tumbled out into the cold night air.

I was in an alleyway roughly two blocks away from the hospice center.

I scrambled to my feet, looked back at the dilapidated building, and pressed the red button on the detonator.

For a split second, nothing happened.

Then, a muffled, deep underground rumble vibrated through the soles of my shoes.

The ground shook violently as the entire back half of the hospice building collapsed inward on itself.

A massive plume of dust and debris shot into the sky, burying the laboratory, the mercenaries, and Carl under tons of concrete.

I stood there in the quiet aftermath, breathing heavily, covered in dirt and blood.

The flash drive was still safely tucked inside my pocket.

It contained all the evidence needed to dismantle the syndicate and access the legitimate offshore funds.

I heard the distant wail of police sirens approaching the scene of the explosion.

I turned away from the destruction and began walking down the dark street.

I knew exactly what I needed to do next.

I was going to use Carl's money to hunt down every last member of the organization that ruined my family.

I disappeared into the shadows just as the first police cruiser rounded the corner.

The nightmare was over, but my new life was just beginning.
