Chapter 6 - The Ransom

Lorenzo kicked the back door of the laundromat open and sprinted into the dark alley.
Gunfire immediately erupted, chipping the brick walls just inches away from his head.
He returned fire, dropping two of Marco's men before ducking behind a rusted dumpster.
He was hopelessly outnumbered, outgunned, and cornered in the dead end of the alleyway.
Instead of rushing him, the gunfire abruptly ceased, leaving a chilling silence in the rain.
Marco stepped out from the shadows, wearing a tailored suit and holding a megaphone.
"Put the gun down, Lorenzo, or I make a very tragic phone call," Marco announced loudly.
Lorenzo tightened his grip on his pistol, refusing to surrender to the traitor.
"You have nothing left to leverage, Marco!" Lorenzo shouted into the darkness.
Marco laughed, a cruel and hollow sound that echoed off the wet pavement.
"Bring her out!" Marco ordered his men.
The back door of a black SUV opened, and two guards dragged a frail, elderly woman into the street.
It was Lorenzo's mother, her hands bound tightly with thick plastic zip ties.
Lorenzo felt a sickening wave of absolute dread wash over his entire body.
He slowly lowered his weapon and stepped out from behind the rusted dumpster.
"Let her go, Marco," Lorenzo demanded, raising his empty hands in the air.
"I will trade her life for the maid and the child," Marco proposed with a wicked smile.
Marco knew that without the child, Lorenzo had no legitimate heir to challenge the syndicate's new leadership.
Lorenzo realized he was trapped in an impossible, agonizing nightmare.
If he refused, his mother would die right in front of his eyes.
If he accepted, he would be handing his only daughter over to a ruthless murderer.
"You have two hours to bring them to the central shipping pier," Marco commanded.
Marco snapped his fingers, and his men shoved Lorenzo's mother back into the vehicle.
As the SUVs drove away, Lorenzo fell to his knees in the cold rain.

When he finally returned to the church basement, he found Clara standing near the doorway, having heard the entire police scanner broadcast.
"I drugged your coffee, Lorenzo," Clara whispered, tears streaming down her face as his vision suddenly began to blur.
