Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Mirror
The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving Lorenzo Vitali alone in the suffocating silence of his dressing room.
He stared at the empty velvet stool where the little girl had just been sitting.
Her tiny, defiant expression was burned completely into his mind.
It was a face he had buried three years ago alongside his late fiancée, Sofia.
Sofia had died in a brutal car explosion just weeks before their wedding.
She had been pregnant with their first child.
The official report from his syndicate stated that no one survived the blast.
Yet, a toddler working in his kitchen had just perfectly mirrored Sofia’s unique, stubborn scowl.
Lorenzo walked over to his mahogany desk and pressed the silver intercom button.
He ordered his head of security, Marco, to bring the employment file for the maid named Clara Bennett.
Within five minutes, Marco entered the room and placed a thin manila folder on the desk.
Lorenzo waited until Marco left before opening the file.
The background check was flawless, showing Clara as a widow from a quiet suburban town.
But Lorenzo was a man who survived by noticing the invisible cracks in perfect stories.
He held Clara's attached photograph up to the warm amber light of his desk lamp.
He retrieved a small magnifying glass from his drawer and examined her features.
Clara’s hair was dyed dark, and she wore thick glasses, but the bone structure was undeniable.
He opened a locked safe hidden behind his bookshelf and pulled out an old family album.
He turned to a photograph of Sofia standing next to her estranged younger sister, Elena.
Lorenzo placed the maid's photo directly next to Elena's face.
They were the exact same woman.
Clara Bennett was a fabricated identity created by the sister of his murdered fiancée.

Before Lorenzo could process the sheer magnitude of this lie, a heavy, muffled thud echoed from the floor above him.
It was the unmistakable sound of a suppressed gunshot coming from the servant's quarters.
