Chapter 2 - The Perfect Lie

Sixteen months earlier, Emily Carter truly believed marrying Brandon Hale was her happily ever after.

She thought it was the beginning of the safest chapter of her life.

She was thirty years old, a dedicated emergency-room nurse from Phoenix.

She had moved to New York after Brandon received a massive promotion at Alder Crest Health Technologies.

Brandon was polished in the way ambitious men often were.

He had learned exactly what people wanted to see and how to deliver it flawlessly.

He remembered every birthday and anniversary.

He sent expensive flowers after Emily's difficult shifts at the hospital.

He proudly carried her bags through airports.

He constantly told strangers how proud he was of the woman who could keep calm while everyone else panicked.

He would tell her that she saved people, while he just moved numbers around.

Emily had always laughed, calling it the most humble thing he had ever said.

Three months after their perfect wedding, Emily became pregnant.

At the very first ultrasound, the technician smiled broadly.

She announced that there were two distinct heartbeats.

Emily burst into happy tears, overwhelming joy filling her chest.

Brandon just stared blankly at the screen.

He asked the technician to confirm it was twins.

In the parking garage afterward, Emily threw her arms around him in pure celebration.

She cheered that they were having two babies.

Brandon hugged her back, but his response was chillingly practical.

He asked if twins usually cost twice as much to raise.

At the time, Emily thought it was just a bad joke driven by nerves.

But the pregnancy became incredibly difficult as she entered her sixth month.

Emily had to drastically reduce her hospital hours.

Her blood pressure rose dangerously high.

Sleep became nearly impossible due to the discomfort and anxiety.

Meanwhile, Brandon began coming home later and later.

First, it was just twice a week.

Then it became four nights.

Soon, he sometimes didn't return until dawn.

He always had a perfect excuse ready.

It was the big merger, he explained.

Then it was demanding investors.

Then a mandatory leadership retreat.

Then a crucial client who only had dinner availability after nine o'clock.

Every single excuse sounded perfectly reasonable by itself.

But together, they formed a massive, impenetrable wall between them.

Emily tried to talk to him about the growing distance, but he always turned it around on her.

He told her the pregnancy hormones were making her paranoid.

He insisted he was building this empire for their family's future.

But as Emily watched the first file on the USB drive, that narrative shattered completely.

The audio file was a recorded phone call Brandon had made to his private accountant.

He wasn't talking about building a future for the twins.

He was demanding to know how quickly he could offshore all of his marital assets before Emily gave birth.
