Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Bribe

The SUV skidded slightly on the icy road as the sheer audacity of Eleanor's confession hit me.
"You bribed the Director of the FBI?" I asked, my voice rising in absolute disbelief.
Eleanor adjusted the faded blue scarf around her neck, remaining infuriatingly calm.
"I didn't bribe him, Lucian. I framed him," she corrected smoothly.
"I transferred forty million dollars of Hector Vargas's blood money directly into a Cayman Islands account explicitly linked to the Director's name."
I stared at her, struggling to comprehend the magnitude of her scheme.
"When the cartel realizes where their money went, they won't come after us," Eleanor explained.
"They will assume the FBI Director orchestrated the theft to fund an off-the-books task force against them."
"The cartel will go to war with the federal government," I realized, the terrifying brilliance of the plan washing over me.
"And while the FBI is completely consumed by a brutal war with Hector's syndicate, they won't have the resources to pursue the indictments against you," Eleanor concluded.
She had engineered a massive, violent collision between my two greatest enemies, allowing us to slip away entirely unnoticed.
"Why would you do this?" I asked, pulling the SUV into an abandoned parking garage to avoid the police patrols sweeping the city.
"You spent three years building a federal case to destroy my empire, and now you are risking a treason charge to save me?"
Eleanor closed her eyes, letting out a long, exhausted sigh.
"I didn't do it to save you, Lucian. I did it to save our son."
She rested her hands protectively over her stomach.
"If you went to federal prison, the rival families would eventually come for me and the baby to secure your remaining assets."
"If Hector took over, we would be hunted for the rest of our lives."
She opened her eyes, looking directly into my soul.
"The only way to guarantee our child's safety was to burn the entire system to the ground."
I leaned back against the headrest, realizing the woman sitting next to me was far more ruthless and calculating than I had ever been.
She had played me, the cartel, and the federal government perfectly.
"So what happens now?" I asked, feeling entirely out of my depth.
"Now, we disappear," Eleanor stated firmly.
She reached into her leather bag and pulled out two sleek, dark passports.
"I secured these months ago. New names, clean backgrounds, and untraceable accounts containing enough legitimate money to live quietly in Europe."
She handed me a passport.
I looked at the name printed inside.
Alexander Pierce.
"We leave for the private airstrip in an hour," Eleanor instructed.
"The pilot is already paid, and the flight plan is filed under diplomatic cover."
I looked from the passport to my pregnant wife.
We were leaving everything behind. The power, the wealth, the fear I had wielded like a weapon for seven years.
For the first time in my life, I felt a strange sense of relief.
We waited in the freezing SUV until the designated time, then drove cautiously to the private airfield on the outskirts of the city.
The blizzard had finally broken, leaving the tarmac covered in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.
A small, unmarked private jet sat idling on the runway, its engines humming quietly in the cold night air.
We walked toward the plane, the freezing wind biting at our faces.
As we reached the boarding stairs, a sleek black town car suddenly sped onto the tarmac, cutting off our path to the aircraft.
The car doors opened simultaneously.
Four men in expensive dark suits stepped out, aiming suppressed weapons directly at us.
These were not cartel thugs or FBI agents.
They moved with the precise, terrifying discipline of elite syndicate assassins.
A fifth man stepped out of the back seat, adjusting his immaculate silk tie.
It was Arthur Vance, my chief financial officer.
He wasn't bleeding anymore, and he wasn't terrified.
He looked completely in control, offering a cold, victorious smile.

"I'm afraid your flight has been canceled, Lucian," Arthur said smoothly.
"Did you really think I would let you walk away with the keys to the empire?"
