Chapter 16 - The Counteroffer

The corridor became a slaughterhouse.
My rifle roared, dropping the first two mercenaries as they stepped through the smoke. Victor fired in perfect synchronization, picking off the flankers with ruthless precision.
But they had the numbers, and they had the firepower.
Heavy suppressive fire chewed through the drywall and shattered the medical equipment around us.
"Reloading!" Victor yelled, ducking behind a steel operating table as bullets sparked off the metal.
I provided cover fire, knowing we couldn't hold them back forever. We had maybe three magazines left between us.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through a portable bullhorn from the shattered doorway.
"Hold your fire!" Arthur Vance commanded from the safety of the rear echelon.
The mercenaries stopped shooting, holding their positions behind the blasted walls of the corridor.
The sudden silence was deafening, broken only by Eleanor's pained groans from the barricaded room behind us.
"Lucian!" Arthur called out, his voice dripping with arrogant confidence. "You are outgunned and out of time. Send out the ledgers, and I will let Victor walk away. I will even make his death quick."
I laughed, a harsh, desperate sound that echoed down the hallway.
"You don't negotiate when you hold all the cards, Arthur!" I shouted back. "You're stalling. Why?"
I looked at Victor, who was quickly checking his remaining ammo.
"He's afraid we'll destroy the books," Victor whispered, realizing the leverage we still held. "If we burn the ledgers, Arthur has nothing to sell to the cartel. They'll kill him."
Arthur needed the books intact.
I pulled my secure burner phone from my jacket. I had taken it from the dead mercenary at the airfield.
"I'm not talking to Arthur," I told Victor. "I'm calling the real authority."
I dialed a number I had memorized years ago—the direct emergency line to the Director of the FBI in Washington. The man Eleanor had framed with the cartel's money.
The line clicked and a heavily encrypted voice answered. "Identify yourself."
"My name is Lucian Moretti," I said, my voice steady. "And I have a counteroffer."
There was a long pause on the line. The FBI had been hunting me for a decade.
"You have sixty seconds before we trace this signal and drone strike your location," the Director replied coldly.
"You don't want me dead, Director," I said. "You want the man who actually framed you for stealing forty million dollars of cartel money. His name is Arthur Vance, and he's standing twenty feet away from me."
"I want the global syndicate routing numbers," the Director countered. "The digital keys to the entire East Coast operation."
"I have them," I lied smoothly. "I will give you the complete digital infrastructure, the routing numbers, and Arthur Vance on a silver platter."
"And your price?" the Director asked.
"Full, unconditional immunity for my wife, Eleanor Moretti, and my newborn child," I demanded. "They vanish. Complete witness protection. And I serve a localized house arrest in Europe."
"You want to walk away from a billion-dollar RICO case with an ankle monitor?" the Director scoffed.
"I'm giving you the keys to dismantle five global cartels," I shot back. "Do we have a deal, or do I burn the evidence right now?"
Another agonizing pause.
"Deal," the Director finally agreed. "An Interpol strike team is ten minutes from your coordinates. Do not destroy the evidence."
I hung up the phone and looked at Victor.

"We just have to hold them off for ten minutes," I said.
Victor smiled, racking his weapon. "Ten minutes is a lifetime in a gunfight, boss."
