Chapter 6 - The Unholy Alliance

The blinding floodlights cast long, terrifying shadows across the unfinished concrete floor of the casino.

I slowly lowered my weapon, setting it carefully on the ground, acutely aware of the assault rifle aimed directly at my heart.

"You really partnered with Hector Vargas?" I asked, staring up at my wife in disbelief.

Hector Vargas was a ruthless cartel boss who had spent five years trying to assassinate me to take over my East Coast shipping routes.

"Hector is a businessman, Lucian," Eleanor replied, her voice echoing coldly in the cavernous space.

"He understands leverage, and unlike you, he actually honors his contracts."

Hector smiled, a terrifying expression that promised absolute violence.

"Your wife made me an incredible offer, Don Moretti," Hector purred, leaning against the concrete railing.

"She promised to hand over the physical ledgers proving your corruption, which I can use to blackmail your political allies into supporting my syndicate."

I looked at Eleanor, feeling a profound sense of betrayal mixing with grudging respect.

"You told Victor you were giving those ledgers to the FBI," I realized aloud.

"I lied to Victor," Eleanor stated simply.

"If I gave the ledgers to the feds, you would just hire an army of expensive lawyers and tie the case up in court for a decade."

She rested her hand gently on her pregnant belly.

"I needed you completely destroyed, Lucian. I needed your empire dismantled in a way that left you utterly powerless."

"So you sold me out to a cartel butcher," I spat, disgusted by her hypocrisy.

"You are just as dirty as I am, Eleanor."

Eleanor shook her head, looking at me with profound sorrow.

"I spent seven years trying to clean your money, trying to pull you into the light," she whispered.

"But you chose the darkness every single time. Now, I am using the darkness to bury you."

Hector Vargas grew impatient with the domestic dispute.

"Enough talking," Hector barked, gesturing to his armed men waiting in the shadows below.

"Take him to the docks and put a bullet in the back of his head."

Two massive cartel enforcers stepped out from the darkness, grabbing me roughly by the arms.

I didn't fight them. I needed to buy time to find an escape route.

As they dragged me toward the exit, my secure phone vibrated in my pocket.

Hector gestured for his men to stop.

"Answer it," Hector ordered, looking amused. "Say goodbye to whoever is left in your pathetic empire."

I pulled the phone from my pocket and answered the call.

It was Arthur Vance, my terrified CFO.

"Lucian, you need to hear this," Arthur said frantically.

"I didn't transfer the forty million dollars back to Hector's cartel accounts like you ordered."

I froze, realizing Arthur had just signed my death warrant.

"What did you do, Arthur?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"Eleanor anticipated you would force me to bypass the escrow freeze," Arthur explained quickly.

"She wrote a hidden algorithm into the offshore servers."

"When I initiated the transfer, the money didn't go to the cartel. It was automatically donated to a dozen international charities."

Hector's amused smile vanished instantly.

"What did he say?" Hector demanded, aiming his rifle at me.

"The forty million dollars is gone, Hector," I said, unable to hide the dark irony of the situation.

"Eleanor just stole your money."

Hector turned his rifle away from me and aimed it directly at Eleanor's chest.

"Is he telling the truth?" Hector roared, his face twisted in pure rage.

Eleanor didn't flinch. She looked incredibly calm in the face of imminent death.

"Yes, Hector," Eleanor admitted. "The money is gone."

Hector cocked his rifle, ready to execute my pregnant wife.

I didn't think about survival. I didn't think about my empire.

I reacted purely on instinct.

I broke free from the two enforcers holding my arms, kicking one in the knee and driving my elbow into the other's throat.

I lunged for my weapon on the ground just as Hector pulled the trigger.
