Chapter 9 - The Real Mastermind

The freezing wind howled across the tarmac, cutting through my heavy coat, but the betrayal in Arthur's eyes was infinitely colder.

I pushed Eleanor behind me, shielding her body with my own as the four assassins kept their suppressed weapons trained on my chest.

"You set this up," I accused Arthur, the puzzle pieces finally snapping into a horrifying picture.

"You didn't just figure out Eleanor's plan this morning. You have been manipulating this entire situation from the very beginning."

Arthur chuckled, a dry, arrogant sound that echoed in the quiet night.

"You always were too arrogant to see the threats right in front of you, Lucian," Arthur mocked, stepping closer to us.

"You built the empire with violence and fear, but I managed the money. And in this world, whoever controls the money controls the throne."

He gestured dismissively toward the private jet waiting on the runway.

"I knew Eleanor was planning to dismantle the legitimate companies and flee to Europe," Arthur explained smoothly.

"So, I let her execute her brilliant little plan. I let her freeze the cartel's money and frame the FBI Director."

"Why?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling slightly from the biting cold.

Arthur looked at my wife with a mixture of admiration and disgust.

"Because your plan perfectly removed all of Lucian's remaining allies and enemies in one swift motion," Arthur revealed.

"With Hector dead and the FBI chasing their own tails, there is a massive power vacuum in the city."

Arthur smiled, a chilling expression of absolute greed.

"And with both of you dead on this runway, I will seamlessly step in and consolidate the entire syndicate under my own leadership."

He had played us all.

Arthur wasn't a victim of Eleanor's schemes; he was the silent parasite waiting to consume the host body when it was weakest.

"You won't get away with this, Arthur," I growled, calculating my odds of drawing my weapon before his men could fire.

The odds were effectively zero.

"I already have, Lucian," Arthur replied casually.

He raised his hand, signaling his assassins to prepare to execute us.

"Goodbye, Don Moretti."

I braced myself, ready to pull Eleanor to the ground and fight to my last breath.

Before Arthur could drop his hand, the pilot of the idling private jet suddenly stepped out of the cockpit and onto the top of the boarding stairs.

He wasn't wearing a pilot's uniform.

He was wearing tactical combat gear, and he was holding a heavy, military-grade sniper rifle.

The pilot didn't hesitate for a microsecond.

He fired a single, deafening shot.

The bullet struck the assassin standing closest to Arthur, dropping the man instantly to the snowy tarmac.

The remaining three assassins scrambled for cover, returning fire blindly toward the aircraft.

"Get down!" I yelled, pulling Eleanor behind the heavy landing gear of the jet.

I drew my weapon, joining the chaotic firefight on the freezing runway.

The tactical pilot on the stairs laid down a brutal wall of suppressive fire, his precision pinning Arthur's men behind the town car.

I used the distraction to flank the car, shooting two of the assassins before they realized I had moved.

The final assassin panicked, breaking cover and sprinting toward the edge of the airfield.

The pilot fired once more, ensuring the man didn't make it far.

The sudden silence was deafening, broken only by the hum of the jet engines and Arthur's terrified whimpering.

Arthur was huddled behind the rear tire of the town car, clutching a superficial graze wound on his arm.

I walked over to him, kicking his dropped weapon away across the ice.

I aimed my gun directly at his head, ready to end the betrayal permanently.

"Wait!" the tactical pilot shouted, quickly jogging down the boarding stairs.

I kept my gun on Arthur but glanced toward the man who had just saved our lives.

He pulled off his tactical helmet, revealing a familiar, scarred face.

It was Victor.

My former head of security. The man I had fought and nearly choked to death in the Bronx warehouse just hours ago.

I stared at Victor in absolute shock.

"Why are you helping me?" I demanded, my mind struggling to process yet another impossible twist.

Victor didn't answer me.

He looked directly at Eleanor, offering a respectful nod.

"The package is secure, Mrs. Moretti," Victor reported formally.

Eleanor stepped out from behind the landing gear, brushing snow from her coat.

"Thank you, Victor," Eleanor said calmly.

I looked back and forth between my wife and the enforcer I thought had betrayed me.

"What the hell is going on here?" I asked, my voice laced with sheer confusion.

Eleanor walked up to me, placing a gentle hand on my arm.

"I didn't pay Victor to betray you in the warehouse, Lucian," Eleanor explained softly.

"I paid him to fake the betrayal, to force you to flee the city with me tonight."

She looked down at Arthur, who was cowering in the snow.

"I knew Arthur was the real mastermind planning to seize the empire," Eleanor continued.

"I knew he would track us to the airfield to eliminate us, so I had Victor waiting in the plane to eliminate him instead."

I stared at my pregnant wife, realizing I had never truly known the woman I married.

She was ten times the mob boss I had ever been.

"So, we really are leaving," I whispered, the reality finally setting in.

"Yes," Eleanor said, turning toward the boarding stairs.

We left Arthur bound in the snow for the police to find and boarded the private jet.

As the plane lifted off into the dark winter sky, leaving New York City behind forever, I finally relaxed, believing the nightmare was over.

But as I poured a celebratory drink at the private bar in the back of the cabin, I noticed Eleanor's leather bag sitting open on the leather seat.

Inside the bag, resting carelessly on top of a stack of cash, was a small, sealed envelope bearing the official seal of the US Department of Justice.

I carefully picked it up and opened it.

It was a signed immunity agreement, guaranteeing federal protection for Eleanor Moretti.

But the agreement wasn't dated from three years ago, when she supposedly became an informant.

It was dated exactly one week from today.

Eleanor hadn't orchestrated this elaborate escape to protect me from the cartel or the FBI.

She had orchestrated this escape to deliver me directly into federal custody in Europe, perfectly isolating me from my money, my men, and my empire.
