Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Ambush

At exactly nine in the morning, I clicked my mouse and transferred one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I sent the money to wipe out the poisonous business debt my husband had brought into our marriage.

He thought I had saved him out of pure, blind loyalty.

He had never been more mistaken in his entire life.

Less than twenty-four hours later, I stepped into my own kitchen and froze.

The trap had already been set perfectly.

The sheer disrespect of the scene in front of me almost felt theatrical.

Julian stood rigid beside the marble island.

Near the entrance, his parents were sealing old cardboard boxes.

They were packing up pieces of my private life as if they were junk that could be cleared away before lunch.

Then I saw Elena leaning against my custom archway.

She was wearing my emerald-green silk robe.

She was sipping from my favorite ceramic mug.

She looked far too comfortable in a home that had never belonged to her.

Julian did not bother with a polite greeting.

He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the counter.

The air between us seemed to harden into ice.

Sign it right now, he ordered with a cold and lifeless voice.

Through the small window of the envelope, I saw the bold words printed across the document.

It was a Petition for Absolute Divorce.

You are useless to me now, Julian sneered.

You did exactly what you were useful for when you paid that debt.

Now collect whatever is left of your things and get out of my house.

His mother lifted a silver-framed photo of my late grandmother.

She wrapped it in newspaper with the smug confidence of a woman handling someone else's memories like trash.

It is honestly for the best, Beatrice said without looking up.

Julian needs someone who understands how to build a legacy.

He does not need someone who only knows how to sit on inherited money.

Elena adjusted my stolen robe and smiled at me with glossy lips.

Let us not turn this into a scene today.

The boxes are right there waiting for you.

They had planned the whole thing with almost impressive cruelty.

They expected panic and begging from a broken wife.

They expected me to crack open in front of them.

Instead, my breathing stayed perfectly calm.

A flicker of sharp amusement rose inside me as I looked at their greedy little performance.

I looked around the house I had built and felt a cold power settle through me.

I am not the abandoned wife you imagine, I said quietly.

I looked directly at his mistress with a terrifyingly calm smile.

First of all, take off my silk robe.

May you like

Second, you really should have checked the pockets before you decided to put it on.

Five minutes later, Elena was screaming so hard the kitchen walls seemed to shake.
