Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Trap

The emergency lights flickered on, casting a dim glow over the confused federal agents.

"What did you do?" Samantha demanded, her smug demeanor instantly vanishing.

"I liquidated the entire holding company thirty minutes ago," I explained.

"While you were busy playing dress-up, I transferred every single dollar of the Fairchild empire into an irrevocable charitable trust."

Samantha's face turned pale as she realized the magnitude of my financial maneuver.

The FBI couldn't seize assets that had already been legally donated to a registered charity.

Her massive career-making bust was suddenly worthless.

"You ruined a federal investigation!" Samantha yelled, stepping aggressively toward me.

"You ruined my daughter's only chance at survival to build your resume," I shot back fiercely.

I pulled a small audio recorder from my purse and pressed play.

It was a recording of Samantha talking to her FBI handler, admitting she knew Brendan was embezzling medical funds but choosing to delay the arrest to gather more evidence.

"I forwarded this tape to the Department of Justice," I told her.

"You are going to face a federal grand jury for criminal negligence."

The lead FBI agent in the room listened to the tape and immediately turned toward Samantha.

"Agent Hayes, surrender your weapon and badge," the lead agent ordered sternly.

Samantha looked around wildly, realizing she was completely trapped by her own ambition.

She reached for her backup weapon hidden in an ankle holster.

Before she could draw the gun, Viktor Volkov stepped out of the shadows.

He didn't use a weapon.

He simply grabbed her wrist with his massive hand and squeezed until she dropped the gun in pain.

The other federal agents rushed forward and placed their own corrupt colleague in handcuffs.

Brendan watched the entire scene unfold from the floor, his spirit completely and utterly broken.

He had lost his company, his money, his mistress, and his freedom in a single night.

The police arrived a few moments later to take custody of Brendan and Ximena.

They dragged him out of the ballroom in front of the flashing cameras of the local news reporters.

Raymond walked up to the stage and placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.

"It is finally over, Nora," the old attorney said softly.

"You won."

I looked at the empty ballroom and took a deep, shuddering breath.

I had destroyed the monsters who hurt my little girl, but the victory still felt incredibly heavy.

I left the plaza and drove back to the quiet brownstone safe house.

I thought the hardest part of my life was finally behind me.
