Chapter 4 - The Asylum Trap

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open again.
Three large men dressed in white medical uniforms marched into the room.
They were carrying heavy leather restraints.
"My wife has suffered a complete psychotic break following the tragic death of our daughter," Brendan lied smoothly to the paramedics.
"She is experiencing severe delusions about my family and our finances."
I backed away from the table, my heart hammering in my throat.
"Don't touch me," I warned the men.
Brendan held up a piece of paper bearing the signature of a corrupt judge.
"As her husband, I have full medical power of attorney," he stated.
If they dragged me into a psychiatric ward, Brendan would immediately seize control of my newly inherited assets.
He would bury the evidence of his embezzlement while I was locked in a padded room.
One of the orderlies lunged forward and grabbed my wrist with crushing force.
I fought back, kicking the man hard in the shin, but he was too strong.
Samantha laughed from the corner of the room.
"Have fun in the psych ward, crazy lady," she taunted me.
They began to drag me toward the service elevator to avoid the main lobby.
I screamed for help, but the board members just looked away, too afraid of Brendan's connections to intervene.
The elevator doors pinged open, and the men pushed me inside.
But the elevator wasn't empty.
Raymond was standing inside, leaning calmly on his wooden cane.
Standing behind Raymond were four heavily armed federal agents wearing tactical vests.
"Remove your hands from my client," Raymond ordered the orderly.
The orderly froze, looking at the federal badges shining under the fluorescent lights.
"We have a court order," the orderly stammered.
"Your court order was signed by a judge who was just indicted for bribery ten minutes ago," one of the agents said.
The agents unholstered their weapons, and the orderlies immediately raised their hands in surrender.
Raymond stepped out of the elevator and handed me a tablet.
"You need to see this right now, Nora," the attorney said urgently.
I looked at the screen and felt the blood drain completely from my face.

"Brendan didn't steal the medical money for himself," Raymond whispered.
"He stole it to pay off a massive gambling debt to the Volkov Syndicate, and they are coming to collect the rest tonight."
