Chapter 2 - THE GREEN THREAD

By noon, I was sitting in the cramped, cluttered office of Hector Ramirez, a private investigator and former forensic detective who owed Elena his life after she paid for his son's medical treatments years ago. I placed a small plastic evidence bag on his desk. Inside was the forest-green button and the shredded wool thread.
"I pulled this from Elena's hand," I said coldly. "My brother Diego was wearing a jacket made of this exact material yesterday. He also has a fresh defensive scratch down his neck."
Hector picked up the bag with tweezers, his face hardening. "They staged it to look like complications from a sudden hemorrhage at home. But this... this proves there was a struggle. Mateo, if I run the DNA under her fingernails from the morgue, and it matches your brother..."
"It will match," I said. "But the police chief is on my mother's payroll. If we hand this to the local authorities, it disappears, and I accidentally drive my car off a cliff tomorrow."
"So, what's the play?" Hector asked, leaning back.
"We cut off their oxygen," I said, pulling out the power of attorney documents I had retrieved from the safe. "They killed Elena because she found out they were embezzling millions from the olive estates, preparing to sell the legacy to a foreign conglomerate and run with the cash. But with Elena dead, they think the shares revert to my mother."
I slid the documents across the desk. "This makes me the sole controller of the estate, the accounts, and the trust. By 9:00 AM tomorrow, I want every single cent transferred to offshore accounts they cannot touch. I want the estate deeds locked in a blind trust. I want them absolutely penniless."

Hector smiled, a dangerous, wolfish grin. "Consider it done. But Mateo... what about the cremation?"
"My mother scheduled it for 3:00 PM today," I said, checking my watch. "I'm going to stop it."
