Chapter 8 - The Shadow Buyer

The sudden darkness in the warehouse was terrifying, broken only by the dim moonlight filtering through the high windows.
I crouched behind a pile of wooden pallets, completely frozen in shock.
Marcus knelt beside me, his weapon drawn and aimed steadily into the shadows.
A tall figure stepped out from behind the massive grandfather clock.
He was wearing an impeccably tailored suit, and he held a silenced pistol leveled directly at my father.
“Who are you?” my father stammered, dropping the ledger onto the concrete floor.
“I am the man your corrupt judge owes a massive amount of money to,” the stranger replied smoothly.
“Judge Sterling was never going to let you keep that estate, Richard.”
“He tipped me off the moment you filed that ridiculous, forged eviction notice.”
The stranger stepped into the moonlight, revealing a sharp, cruel face with a deep scar across his jaw.
“My employers have been looking for those offshore accounts for a very long time.”
“Now, kick the book toward me, and I might let you walk out of here alive.”
My father, completely paralyzed by fear, slowly nudged the ledger with his foot.
I realized with absolute certainty that this man was part of a major criminal syndicate.
If he took that ledger, my grandparents' entire legacy would fund organized crime, and my father would likely be murdered anyway.
“We have to stop him,” I whispered to Marcus.
“If I shoot him, we expose our position, and there might be more men outside,” Marcus whispered back.
“We need a distraction.”
I looked around the dusty floor and found a heavy steel bolt lying near my foot.
I picked it up and threw it as hard as I could toward the far corner of the warehouse.
The heavy metal clattered loudly against a stack of empty oil drums.
The stranger instantly spun around, firing two silenced shots into the dark corner.
In that brief moment of distraction, Marcus lunged forward from our hiding spot.
He tackled the armed stranger to the concrete ground, knocking the pistol out of his hand.
My father did not try to help.
Instead, the coward scrambled on his hands and knees, grabbed the ledger, and ran toward the back exit.
“He’s getting away!” I yelled, sprinting after my father.
My father burst through the rusted back door and stumbled out onto the muddy riverbank.
I chased him outside, the cold night air biting at my lungs.
“Stop right there!” I screamed, tackling him from behind.
We both crashed into the thick, freezing mud.
My father fought back aggressively, striking me across the face with his elbow.
I tasted blood, but I absolutely refused to let go of his expensive jacket.
“You are insane, Clare!” he yelled, trying to pry my fingers off him.
“I am saving this family's money!”
“You are destroying this family!” I screamed back, fighting desperately.
I managed to rip the velvet pouch from his grip, rolling away into the tall grass.
I scrambled to my feet, clutching the precious ledger tightly to my chest.
My father stood up, completely covered in mud, and pulled a small switchblade from his pocket.
“Give it to me, Clare, or I swear I will hurt you,” he threatened, taking a step forward.
Suddenly, bright blue and red police lights flooded the entire riverbank.
Three armored police cruisers smashed through the chain-link fence, surrounding us completely.
But the men stepping out of the vehicles were not local cops.
They were wearing dark windbreakers with the letters FBI printed in bright yellow across their backs.
“Drop the weapon and put your hands on your head!” a federal agent commanded through a megaphone.
My father dropped the knife instantly and fell to his knees in total defeat.
I breathed a massive sigh of relief, knowing the nightmare was finally over.
But as a female agent approached to escort me to safety, she looked at the ledger in my hands.
She frowned and pulled her weapon, aiming it directly at my chest.

“Hand over the evidence, Clare,” the agent said with a sinister smile.
“Judge Sterling sends his regards.”
