Chapter 10 - The Unpaid Debt

Marcus drew his weapon immediately, and we approached the house with extreme caution.
The living room was completely quiet, and the heavy duct tape lay shredded on the carpet.
My mother and sister were gone, having clearly fled the scene before the real police could arrive.
“They are running,” Marcus said, checking the empty hallway.
“It won't matter, their passports were flagged an hour ago, so they will be arrested at the airport by morning.”
I walked into my kitchen and turned on the warm, yellow overhead lights.
The house was messy and battered, but it was completely mine again.
Over the next few weeks, everything finally fell into perfectly satisfying order.
My father, mother, and sister were all arrested and indicted on multiple counts of federal fraud, extortion, and conspiracy.
Judge Sterling was completely stripped of his authority and federally indicted for mass corruption.
With Marcus’s brilliant legal help, I successfully accessed my grandfather's offshore accounts, securing the entire fortune legally.
I used a portion of the funds to fully restore the antique grandfather clock to its original, breathtaking beauty.
I even hired Marcus as the permanent manager of my newly established charitable foundation.
For the first time in my life, I felt truly happy, safe, and completely in control of my own destiny.
The toxic weight of my greedy family was permanently removed from my beautiful world.
It was a quiet Tuesday evening, and I was peacefully sipping tea on my back porch, enjoying the stunning sunset.
Everything was perfect.
Then, the doorbell rang.
I walked to the front door and opened it to find a courier standing on the porch.
He did not ask for a signature, he simply handed me a sleek black envelope sealed with thick red wax and walked away.
I broke the wax seal, sliding out a single, old photograph and a handwritten note.
The photograph showed my grandparents standing next to a terrifyingly familiar man—the suited criminal from the warehouse.
The note was written in elegant, blood-red ink.

“Your family’s financial debt was paid, but the blood debt for what your grandfather did to my father remains entirely unsettled.”
“We will see you very soon, Clare.”
