Chapter 7 - The Dead-Man's Switch

I stared at the small black detonator in my hand while bullets chipped away at the marble island above my head.
A small red light blinked steadily on the device, waiting for my final command.
I remembered my father telling me once that true power was not about having money, but having the ability to destroy it.
The detonator was linked directly to massive explosive charges buried deep within the rare-earth mineral caves in the Ozarks.
If I pressed the button, the entire cavern system would collapse, burying the four-billion-dollar fortune forever.
The cartel would lose their primary investment, and Marcus would be hunted down by his own ruthless bosses for his failure.
I shouted over the deafening gunfire, telling Marcus exactly what I was holding in my hand.
The shooting stopped almost immediately, leaving only the sound of the wind howling through the shattered penthouse windows.
Marcus demanded that I stand up and show him the device, his voice shaking with sudden, unmasked terror.
I slowly stood up from behind the marble counter, holding the detonator high in the air.
Skylar gasped, dropping her champagne glass as she realized her massive payday was seconds away from vanishing.
My mother raised her pistol again, but her hands were trembling violently now.
I told them that if anyone fired another shot, my thumb would slip and the mountain would collapse.
Marcus ordered his men to lower their weapons, sweating profusely in his expensive tailored suit.
He begged me to negotiate, offering me half the profits if I just handed over the device.
I looked at my mother and my sister, realizing they had traded our family's entire legacy for blood money.
I told them that some things were simply not for sale.
I pressed the heavy black button on the detonator until I heard a distinct, permanent click.
Marcus screamed in sheer horror, dropping to his knees as the realization of his failure set in.
However, the explosion did not happen in the Ozark mountains as they all expected.
Instead, a deafening blast echoed from the underground parking garage of the luxury high-rise we were currently standing in.
The entire penthouse shook violently, throwing everyone to the floor in a chaotic scramble.
I smiled, knowing the detonator was actually linked to the cartel's fleet of armored vehicles loaded with their laundered cash downstairs.
My father had set up the ultimate financial sabotage to cripple their operation locally.
Hank used the massive confusion to grab me by the tactical vest and pull me toward the shattered window.
He had secured a specialized rappelling line to the steel structural beam during the intense firefight.
Hank told me it was time to leave the family reunion before the building collapsed.

We leaped out of the forty-second-story window, plunging into the dark, freezing night air.
Just as we began our rapid descent, my mother leaned out the shattered window with her pistol aimed directly at my harness.
