Chapter 7 - The Interception

David slammed on the brakes, pulling the SUV violently onto the muddy shoulder of the highway.

The tires locked, and we skidded to a halt inches from a metal guardrail.

He threw the car into park and vaulted into the backseat next to me.

The solid red light on the carrier cast an eerie glow over the sleeping baby's face.

We had less than a minute before the failsafe detonated.

David told me I had to carefully unbuckle the baby while he dismantled the side panel.

My hands shook violently as I pressed the release button on the straps.

The buckle was jammed tight, likely part of the security mechanism.

I cursed and pulled out a small pocket knife from my jacket.

I carefully slipped the blade under the thick nylon strap and began sawing.

David used the car keys to pry open the plastic casing housing the explosive.

He exposed a bundle of wires glued directly to a block of grey putty.

He muttered that he needed to cut the power wire, but they were all completely black.

I finally sliced through the last strap and gently lifted the newborn free.

I pulled the baby hard against my chest and scrambled back into the front passenger seat.

David grabbed my pocket knife and stared at the identical black wires.

He made a blind choice, slicing through the thickest one in the center.

The continuous whining sound stopped instantly.

The red light faded to black.

David let out a massive breath, slumping back against the leather seat.

He grabbed the rigged carrier, opened his door, and threw it into the deep ditch beside the road.

We were safe, but we had just lost five crucial minutes.

He jumped back into the driver's seat and threw the car into drive.

I told him we still had fifteen minutes to save my sister.

We accelerated back onto the empty, rain-slicked highway.

I watched the speedometer climb past eighty miles an hour.

Suddenly, blinding high beams flooded the cabin from behind us.

A massive, black armored truck roared up our bumper out of nowhere.

Before David could change lanes, the truck violently rammed our rear bumper.

The impact sent our SUV spinning out of control across the wet asphalt.
