Chapter 1 - The Piece of Paper

The silence in the university auditorium was deafening. Thousands of people—parents, professors, and students—held their breath as Stella stood at the microphone, the stage lights reflecting in her tear-filled eyes.
"Our biological father wasn't able to make it today," Stella repeated, her voice echoing through the massive hall. "In fact, he hasn't made it to a single day in the last twenty-three years."
Chloe unfolded the piece of paper she had pulled from her gown. Her hands were shaking. Harper put an arm around her sister’s shoulders to steady her.
"But our Dad is here," Chloe said, leaning into the mic. She looked directly at me, sitting in the third row with my cheap, shaking camera. "The man who gave up his twenties, his savings, and his sleep to raise three girls who weren't his responsibility."
My heart hammered against my ribs. The cheap suit I had bought for the occasion suddenly felt very tight.
"Uncle Elias," Harper said, her voice cracking. "You thought you were just keeping us safe. But you gave us a life. And today, we want to give you something back."
Stella stepped forward. "This piece of paper isn't a speech. It's a legally binding petition for adult adoption, signed by a judge this morning. We don't want to just be your nieces anymore. We want your last name. We are officially, legally, your daughters."
The crowd erupted. It wasn't polite applause; it was a roaring, standing ovation. Thousands of people got to their feet.
I couldn't breathe. The camera slipped from my hands. I dropped to my knees right there in the aisle, burying my face in my hands as twenty-three years of exhaustion, fear, and overwhelming love poured out of me in heavy, uncontrollable sobs.

The girls rushed off the stage, their graduation gowns flowing behind them, and tackled me in a massive, tearful embrace.
It was the happiest moment of my life. But I didn't know that in the shadows of the auditorium balcony, a man in a tailored $5,000 suit was watching us. A man who had just decided he wanted his family back.
