Chapter 4 - The Mother Awakes

Vance collapsed onto the floor, clutching his ruined leg as blood pooled onto the nursery rug.
The grandmother and aunt screamed in unison, backing away against the far wall.
Through my fading vision, I looked up toward the splintered doorway.
Sarah, my sister-in-law, stood there barefoot in her hospital gown, leaning heavily against the doorframe.
She was holding David’s hunting rifle, her hands remarkably steady despite the fresh bandages visible on her abdomen.
"Get away from my baby," Sarah commanded, her voice raspy but echoing with lethal authority.
David snapped out of his shock, rushing forward to kick the sledgehammer away from Vance’s reach.
I fought the heavy, pulling darkness of the sedative the aunt had injected into me.
I managed to roll over, wrapping my body entirely around my screaming niece to shield her.
"Sarah, you should be in the ICU," David gasped, terrified by his wife's pale complexion.
"The hospital called and told me my mother-in-law forged discharge papers for my baby," Sarah said coldly.
She cocked the rifle again, the mechanical click sounding incredibly loud in the tense room.
She aimed the barrel directly at the grandmother's chest.
"You stole my embryos, Evelyn," Sarah sneered, revealing she knew the truth all along.
"I found the hidden bank accounts and the emails between you and Vance three days ago."
The grandmother held her hands up, her arrogant facade finally crumbling into genuine terror.
"Sarah, please, he offered me ten million dollars!" the grandmother pleaded pathetically.
"We were going bankrupt, I had to do it to save the family legacy!"
Sarah didn't flinch, her finger resting dangerously close to the trigger.
"You sold my child to a monster to save your country club membership," Sarah whispered.
Vance groaned in agony on the floor, his face pale from the rapid blood loss.
"You can't keep her," Vance choked out, coughing up a spatter of blood.
"My lawyers have already filed the paperwork, the child is legally mine."
Sarah lowered the barrel of the gun slightly, aiming it at Vance's other knee.
"Lawyers can't file paperwork for a dead man," Sarah stated without an ounce of hesitation.
Before Sarah could pull the trigger, the wail of police sirens pierced the night air outside the window.
The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the drawn security shutters.
The aunt suddenly burst into manic laughter, pointing a trembling finger at Sarah.

"I called the police twenty minutes ago," the aunt revealed with a wicked grin.
"I told them an armed intruder broke into the house and is trying to murder us."
