Chapter 2 - The Calm Before the Storm

For the next three days, Clara and Leo stayed completely hidden in my home. We ordered takeout, watched cartoons, and I let my daughter sleep for fourteen hours straight to recover from the nightmare she had endured.
Behind the scenes, Harrison and I were building a guillotine.
Because I still had the original, notarized deed securely locked in my bank's safety deposit box, proving Mark's forgery was incredibly simple. Harrison hired a forensic handwriting expert who confirmed within twenty-four hours that my signature on the transfer was a blatant, sloppy fake.
But we didn't just want the house back. We wanted them to burn.
“Mark committed federal wire fraud by transferring that loan money across state lines,” Harrison explained, sitting in my living room with a stack of files. “And Brenda is an accessory after the fact. The bank is going to be furious when they realize their half-a-million-dollar collateral is completely void.”
“When do we strike?” I asked, sipping my coffee.
“Tonight,” Harrison smiled sharply. “Mark and Brenda are hosting a ‘launch party’ for his new startup at the house this evening. They’ve invited local investors. It’s the perfect time to serve them.”
I looked at Clara, who was sitting on the sofa, clutching a throw pillow. She looked terrified, but beneath the fear, I saw a tiny spark of the fierce, independent woman I had raised.
“Clara,” I said softly. “You don't have to come. You can stay here with Leo.”

Clara took a deep breath. She looked at the forged documents, then at the bruised bags under her own eyes in the hallway mirror.
“No,” Clara said, her voice steadying. “I’m coming with you. I want to watch them lose everything.”
