Chapter 2 - The Silent Watcher

Mateo stared endlessly at the chilling note in his dirt-stained hands.
He recognized the sharp, aggressive handwriting absolutely immediately.
It belonged to Sheriff Davies, the corrupt man who ruled the dusty town of Blackwood with an iron fist.
Elena fell hard to her knees in the dirt, consumed by absolute despair.
She realized in a single heartbeat that their entire lives for the past two decades had been a complete lie.
Mateo gently reached down and helped her back to her feet.
His mind was currently racing with a dozen different, terrifying possibilities.
He knew perfectly well that Davies was a ruthless predator who would use this leverage to destroy them completely.
They quickly worked together to fill the deep hole back in to hide their desperate tracks.
As they walked slowly back toward the safety of the ranch house, Mateo felt a prickle of dread on his neck.
He felt with absolute certainty that they were being watched from the surrounding hills.
He scanned the dark, endless horizon but saw absolutely nothing except the deep shadows of the desert.
They quickly entered the warm ranch house and securely locked the heavy wooden doors behind them.
Mateo walked straight to the kitchen and poured them both a stiff, generous drink of cheap whiskey.
Elena took a sip and finally asked what the stolen ledger had actually contained.
Mateo took a deep breath before finally admitting the horrific truth.
He told her that the book contained the names of every corrupt official and wealthy landowner in the entire county.
It also contained the undeniable proof about how Elena's husband had actually died all those years ago.
Elena gasped loudly, covering her mouth with her trembling hands in pure shock.
Before she could ask another single question, the old landline phone on the kitchen wall began to ring.
It rang endlessly and aggressively, echoing loudly through the quiet, tense house.
Mateo walked over and answered the heavy receiver with a sinking, heavy heart.
A chilling, familiar voice on the other end of the line spoke only a single sentence.
The voice whispered for him to look out his front window before the line went completely dead.
Mateo slowly pulled back the heavy fabric curtain and looked out into the moonlit driveway.
He completely froze in sheer, unadulterated horror at the gruesome sight waiting for him.
The freshly severed head of his prized stallion was resting perfectly on the hood of his old pickup truck.

A large wooden sign was violently nailed directly into the truck's windshield.
The blood-stained words on the sign declared that he had exactly twenty-four hours to pay his debts.
