Chapter 8 - The Matriarch's Game

I stood frozen in the pouring rain, my gun hanging loosely at my side.

"You sent your own men to slaughter me," I yelled over the sound of the thunder.

My mother merely sighed, adjusting the expensive diamond brooch pinned to her lapel.

"Business is business, my son," she replied with chilling indifference.

"You were always too sentimental, too eager to operate in the legitimate light."

She slowly shifted her gaze toward Elena and the little girl holding the wrench.

"Hand over Lorenzo's bastard child, and the woman will receive the finest medical care in the city."

It was a devil's bargain, designed perfectly to exploit my known weaknesses.

"If I give you Mia, you will murder her to secure your total control," I stated firmly.

My mother smiled, a terrifyingly sweet expression that had doomed dozens of men before me.

"If you refuse, my snipers hidden in the trees will execute all three of you right now," she warned.

Elena pushed weakly against my chest, her breathing shallow and labored.

"Do it," Elena whispered desperately.

"Save yourself and let me die here."

I looked down at Mia, who was gripping my hand with surprising strength.

I slowly raised my weapon, pointing the barrel directly into the back seat at my own flesh and blood.

"Put the gun down, Adrian," my mother scolded, looking genuinely disappointed.

I heard the distinct metallic click of a sniper rifle bolt echoing from the darkness behind us.

We were completely surrounded, caught in a flawless tactical trap.

But out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a massive fuel tanker truck parked at a closed gas station fifty yards away.

The enormous silver tank was heavily pressurized and completely full of highly flammable gasoline.

I didn't lower my weapon in defeat as my mother expected.

Instead, I pivoted sharply on my heel and aimed my gun squarely at the massive pressurized tank.
