Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Salute

The entire room fell into a stunned and suffocating silence.

Every single person in the Veterans Hall stared at the man in the crisp white uniform.

I slowly placed the plastic serving tray onto a nearby folding table.

The officer held his rigid salute without caring about the hundreds of eyes watching us.

"Commander Andrea Vance, your presence is urgently required," he said in a booming voice.

A collective gasp echoed from the front rows where the local politicians were sitting.

My stepmother, Gladys, dropped her crystal wine glass onto the hardwood floor.

The shattering glass broke the heavy silence in the room.

"There must be some kind of mistake," Gladys stammered nervously as she rushed toward us.

"My stepdaughter washed out of the Navy months ago," she insisted with a forced laugh.

The officer finally lowered his hand and glared at Gladys with absolute absolute disdain.

"Ma'am, you are speaking to the Director of Naval Cyber Intelligence," he corrected her sharply.

"Commander Vance did not quit, she was promoted to a classified division," he added.

I watched the smug satisfaction completely drain from my stepmother's pale face.

My father stood up from his front-row seat with a look of pure confusion.

"Andrea, what is going on here?" my father asked weakly.

The officer handed me a thick manila folder sealed with red classification tape.

"We intercepted a massive wire fraud operation targeting veteran charity funds," he explained loudly.

The murmurs in the crowd instantly turned into angry and suspicious whispers.

"The money was traced directly back to the charity run by your stepmother," he continued.

Gladys took a frantic step backward and bumped into the dessert table.

"This is an outrageous lie!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

I calmly broke the red seal on the folder and pulled out the top document.

"It is not a lie, Gladys," I said quietly.

I held up a bank statement showing a massive offshore transfer made just yesterday.

"And you used my forged signature to do it," I revealed to the shocked crowd.
