Chapter 7 - The Arrests

They didn't make it a week on the streets.

Without money, friends (who all abandoned them the second the money dried up), or shelter, Beatrice and Clara had been sleeping in Clara’s Mercedes in the parking lot of a cheap motel.

I wasn't there when it happened, but Harrison sent me the police report and the dashcam footage.

At 6:00 AM on a Tuesday, four squad cars surrounded the Mercedes. Police officers drew their weapons, shouting for Beatrice and Clara to step out of the vehicle.

Clara tried to fight them. She actually slapped a police officer, screaming, “Do you know who I am? I’m Clara Vance!” That earned her an additional charge of assaulting an officer.

They were thrown onto the dirty asphalt, handcuffed, and shoved into the back of police cruisers while the motel guests watched. The Mercedes was impounded as an asset purchased with stolen funds. Their humiliation was absolute and public.

When I showed the news clip to Emily, she didn't smile. She just took a long, deep breath, as if a massive weight had finally been lifted from her chest.

“It’s over,” she whispered.
