Chapter 6 - The Legal Strike

Within forty-eight hours, Harrison Sterling went to war.

He didn't just file a civil lawsuit; he walked directly into the District Attorney’s office with a mountain of evidence. The forged loan documents. The credit cards opened in Emily’s name. The medical reports from the pediatrician detailing Leo’s severe malnutrition. The photos of the squalid back kitchen where they had been forced to live.

Because Beatrice had used electronic wire transfers to move the stolen funds, it became a federal issue. Wire fraud, identity theft, child endangerment, and false imprisonment.

Emily was terrified of testifying. She still flinched when a door closed too loudly.

“You don't have to face them, Em,” I promised her one night, holding her tight. “Harrison said the paper trail is so rock-solid, they won't even be able to fight it in court.”

But Emily looked up at me, a new, fierce spark lighting up her beautiful eyes. “No. I want to. I want to look them in the eye when they lose everything.”

My wife, the woman who had survived four years of absolute hell, was finding her strength again.
