Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Chloe didn't scream this time. The reality of federal prison completely shattered her mind. She dropped the wet envelope onto the marble floor and fell to her knees.
“Please,” she sobbed, crawling toward me, trying to grab the hem of my trousers. “Please, Julian. I’m sorry. I’ll do anything. I’ll be your servant. I’ll do whatever you want. Please don't let them take me.”
I stepped back, disgusted by her complete lack of dignity. She was willing to destroy my mother’s life without a second thought, but the moment she faced consequences, she became a sniveling coward.
“You wanted to see the ruthless billionaire, Chloe,” I looked down at her. “This is him. I don't break glasses. I break lives.”
The sound of sirens pierced the rainy night. Red and blue lights flashed through the massive windows of the foyer.
Marcus opened the front door, stepping aside as three armed federal agents rushed into the house.
“Clarissa Vane,” the lead agent barked, pulling her up from the floor roughly. “You are under arrest for extortion, wire fraud, and suspicion of murder. You have the right to remain silent.”
As they dragged her out the door in handcuffs, she didn't even look back. The iron gates of the estate closed behind the police cruisers, shutting her out of my world forever.
I turned and walked upstairs. My mother was sitting in her reading chair, knitting quietly. She looked up and smiled.

“Is it over, Julian?” she asked softly.
“It’s over, Mom,” I said, kissing her forehead. “She can never hurt you again.”
