Chapter 6 - The Silent Alarm

David's polite smile instantly vanished into a mask of pure rage.

He threw the decryption device onto the concrete floor in frustration.

He warned me that I had just wasted my only chance for a painless execution.

I knew I had to create a massive distraction before he raised the gun again.

I slowly backed away, inching closer to the smart-home control panel mounted on the wall.

I had installed the panel last year to control the basement climate and security features.

I told David that the real code was split into two parts, and I needed a moment to remember.

While he glared at me, I reached behind my back and typed in a four-digit override sequence.

It was the silent panic alarm designed to lock down the entire house in case of a home invasion.

I expected to hear the distant wail of police sirens approaching the neighborhood.

Instead, a computerized voice echoed from the overhead speakers.

The voice cheerfully announced that the emergency lockdown protocol was initiated.

Thick metal storm shutters violently slammed down over every single window in the house.

Heavy magnetic locks engaged on the doors with a resounding mechanical click.

I thought I had trapped David inside with us until the police arrived.

David simply started laughing, a cold and terrifying sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

He held up his cell phone, showing me that he had already hacked my smart-home system.

The computerized voice announced that the ventilation purge would begin in two minutes.

David had rigged the system to flood the sealed basement with lethal carbon monoxide.
