Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Ally

The door opened two inches with a slow, agonizing creak.

And the first face I saw was not my brother’s angry glare.

It was his daughter, Lucy, looking completely terrified.

Her brown eyes were wide with a frantic, desperate energy I had never seen in her before.

She shoved a small silver flash drive into my sweaty palm and pressed a trembling finger to her pale lips.

"Take this and run as fast as you can," she mouthed silently.

Before I could even process what she was handing me, Wade shoved his daughter violently out of the way.

He stepped heavily into the small bathroom, his massive frame blocking the only exit to the hallway.

The fake, gentle smile he had worn downstairs was completely gone from his face.

"Give me the phone right now, Claire," he demanded, holding out his thick, calloused hand.

I instinctively stepped backward, shielding our fragile mother behind my own body.

"I already sent the pictures of the bank statements, Wade," I lied, my thumb hovering nervously over the send button.

He lunged forward like a wild animal, grabbing my wrist with the same brutal force he used on Mom.

The phone slipped from my sweaty grasp and shattered violently against the cold porcelain tile.

Mom screamed in absolute terror, clutching the heavy blue wool coat tightly around her bruised chest.

"You always had to ruin everything, didn't you?" Wade growled, pinning my shoulders aggressively against the bathroom sink.

He reached into his thick denim pocket and pulled out a heavy steel padlock.

"I am going to lock you both in here until you learn some basic respect," he threatened with a wicked grin.

Suddenly, the sharp sound of a heavy wooden door being kicked open shattered the tense silence from downstairs.

Heavy combat boots stormed aggressively across the hardwood floor of the living room.

A deep, overwhelmingly familiar voice echoed loudly up the wooden staircase.

"Wade, step away from them right now, or I will shoot you where you stand."

Wade froze entirely, the arrogant color completely draining from his angry, flushed face.

He looked at me in absolute, undeniable horror.

"You called Miller?" Wade whispered, his voice trembling with sudden, genuine fear.

David Miller was my ex-fiancé, a man Wade had ruthlessly run out of this town five long years ago.

I pushed past my stunned brother and saw David standing at the top of the stairs with his weapon drawn.

He looked older, significantly harder, and absolutely furious as he aimed his gun.

"Get your mother and get out of this house immediately, Claire," David ordered with professional authority.

I grabbed Mom's trembling hand and pulled her quickly toward the safety of the stairs.

We were halfway down the wooden steps when David's police radio crackled loudly to life.

"Officer down, suspect is heavily armed and dangerous," a panicked voice screamed over the static.

David looked down at his radio in sheer, momentary confusion.

Wade suddenly smiled wickedly, pulling a sleek black handgun from the hidden back of his waistband.

"Did you really think I didn't plan for this exact day, Claire?" Wade laughed coldly, raising his weapon.
