Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

I collapsed to my knees in the doorway, the sound of the flatline ringing in my ears like a death sentence.
Then, a nurse rushed past me and slammed a button on the wall, silencing the horrific alarm.
"She is breathing on her own!" a doctor shouted, pulling the oxygen tube carefully from Clara's throat.
The police had arrived just in time to stop a rogue hospital orderly from injecting a lethal dose of potassium into her IV line.
Clara slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights, and turned her head toward me.
I walked over to the bed, tears streaming freely down my face, and laid our beautiful son gently on her chest.
Fast forward three months, and the dark nightmare that almost consumed our family was finally over.
My mother was denied bail and sentenced to a federal penitentiary for the rest of her natural life.
Clara had fully recovered, her cheeks flushed with color as she rocked our son in the nursery of our brand new house.
We had moved to a quiet, secure neighborhood in a different state, leaving the ashes of our old life entirely behind.
I finally felt safe, knowing the monster who bought me and tortured my wife was locked in a concrete cell forever.
I kissed Clara's forehead, walked down the stairs, and opened the front door to check the afternoon mail.
Sitting inside the mailbox was a thick, black envelope with no return address and no postage stamp.
I tore the seal open and pulled out a photograph of Clara, the baby, and me sleeping in our new bed, taken from inside our room just last night.

Tucked behind the photograph was a handwritten note sealed with a familiar red wax stamp.
The elegant handwriting read, "She was just the distraction, brother, and our real mother is finally ready to meet you."
