Chapter 1 - The Confrontation

Lily didn't run.
She just stared at me with wide, terrified blue eyes.
Margaret froze, the wooden ruler still raised in the air like a weapon.
I stepped fully into the kitchen and dropped my heavy laptop bag onto the floor.
The loud thud made both of them jump.
"Put it down, Margaret," I repeated, my voice deadly quiet but echoing in the tense room.
Margaret slowly lowered her arm, but the arrogant smirk never left her wrinkled face.
She tossed the ruler onto the table, right next to Lily's spilled milk.
"You're home early, Sarah," she said smoothly, as if we were just discussing the weather.
"I asked you not to discipline my child," I said, walking over and pulling Lily behind my legs.
Margaret let out a dry, condescending laugh.
"Someone has to teach her not to be a failure," she replied coldly.
I felt my blood boil, but I remembered the recording still running on my phone.
"Hitting a six-year-old over a spelling mistake is abuse, Margaret."
Before she could answer, the front door rattled and opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.
My husband, Daniel, walked into the kitchen, loosening his tie.
"Hey, what's going on in here?" he asked, looking at the spilled milk and Lily's tears.
I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
"Daniel, your mother just hit Lily with a ruler," I said, pulling out my phone.
Daniel sighed heavily and rubbed his temples.
He didn't look angry at his mother; he looked annoyed at me.
"Sarah, we've talked about this," he groaned.
"Talked about what?" I demanded in shock.
Margaret stepped forward and placed a gentle hand on her son's arm.
"She's having another one of her episodes, Danny," Margaret whispered with fake sympathy.

Daniel looked at me with cold, dead eyes.
"Hand over the phone, Sarah, or I'm calling the police to report your psychotic break," he said.
