Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

The mysterious man plunged the thick needle directly into my thigh without a single moment of hesitation.
Almost instantly, the heavy fog in my brain began to aggressively clear, and the terrifying paralysis released its grip on my muscles.
I gasped for air, coughing violently as the thick smoke from the front porch explosion filled my burning lungs.
The man grabbed me by the back of my coat and hauled me to my feet with shocking physical strength.
Maya was groaning on the floor near the fireplace, clutching her bleeding shoulder where a piece of shrapnel had struck her.
"Who are you?" I managed to croak, leaning heavily against the wall to keep my unstable balance.
"My name is Leo, and technically speaking, Julian is my younger half-brother," the man replied, keeping his shotgun aimed at the doorway.
He explained that Eleanor had hidden him away at a remote boarding school decades ago to protect him from Julian's psychopathic father.
Leo was the true, legitimate heir to the family fortune, a secret Julian had only recently discovered and tried desperately to bury.
"He sent assassins after me last night, which is how I knew to track his security team to this cabin," Leo stated coldly.
We didn't have time for a full family reunion, because the surviving members of Julian's tactical team were already regrouping in the yard.
Bullets began tearing through the wooden walls of the cabin, shredding the antique furniture into splintered debris.
"Stay behind me and do exactly as I say," Leo ordered, tossing me a loaded handgun from his belt.
We moved toward the back of the house, using the kitchen island as cover while heavy gunfire relentlessly destroyed the living room.
Leo kicked open the back door and tossed a smoke grenade onto the patio, creating a thick gray wall of cover.
We sprinted through the blinding smoke, dodging stray bullets that snapped angrily through the freezing air around us.
Leo's heavily armored pickup truck was hidden in the dense treeline just beyond the edge of Maya's property.
We dove into the cab, and Leo slammed the engine into gear, tearing through the forest underbrush to avoid the main road.
I sat in the passenger seat, gripping the handgun tightly as I processed the absolute insanity of the last twenty-four hours.
Julian was not just a cheating husband; he was a corporate warlord actively hunting down his own bloodline.
"We need to go to the police," I urged, still hoping that some shred of the justice system remained uncorrupted.
Leo shook his head grimly, keeping his eyes entirely focused on navigating the treacherous dirt path.
"The police are busy raiding your house right now, Sarah, because Julian just framed you for a brutal murder."
He tossed his cell phone into my lap, allowing me to read the breaking news headline illuminated on the screen.
My heart stopped completely as I stared at a photograph of my own driveway surrounded by bright yellow police tape.
