Chapter 9 - The Final Hostage

Pure, unadulterated panic ripped through my chest as I stared at the empty back seat of my car.
I frantically scanned the dark, chaotic airfield for any sign of my four six-year-old sons.
Through the heavy rain, I spotted a dark figure dragging the boys toward a small, unmarked helicopter at the edge of the runway.
It was Vance, the corrupt private investigator I had knocked out in the alleyway hours ago.
He had managed to track us to the airfield and was attempting a desperate, last-minute kidnapping to secure his own ransom.
I did not wait for the FBI agents to mobilize or for my grandfather to issue orders.
I sprinted across the slick tarmac with a level of speed and ferocity I did not know I possessed.
Vance was struggling to force the terrified, crying children into the open cabin of the idling helicopter.
I tackled him from behind just as he tried to climb into the pilot's seat.
We tumbled out of the helicopter and crashed brutally onto the hard, unforgiving asphalt.
Vance pulled a combat knife from his tactical belt and slashed wildly at my face.
I dodged the deadly blade, feeling the cold steel slice through the fabric of my tailored suit jacket.
I grabbed his wrist with both hands, twisting his arm backward until I heard a loud, sickening crack.
Vance screamed in agony and dropped the knife, completely neutralized by the severe break.
I delivered a punishing blow to his temple, ensuring he would not get back up a second time.
I rushed to the helicopter and pulled all four of my beautiful sons into a massive, desperate embrace.
They clung to my shoulders, sobbing into my ruined suit as the heavy rain washed over us.
Clara arrived a moment later, collapsing to her knees and wrapping her arms around all of us.
The FBI agents finally reached our position, dragging the unconscious Vance away to join my father and Sloane in the transport vans.
I looked up and saw my grandfather rolling his wheelchair toward us, a rare, genuine smile softening his weathered face.
He told me that the Sterling empire was now entirely mine to command, free from the toxic corruption of the past.
I thanked him, feeling a profound sense of peace as I finally held my true family in my arms.
But as my grandfather turned his wheelchair around, he suddenly gasped and began coughing violently into a white handkerchief.

He dropped the fabric, revealing a massive stain of fresh blood, and looked at me with absolute terror in his eyes.
He grabbed my arm with terrifying strength and whispered that someone had secretly poisoned him during the flight.
