Chapter 5 - The Double Agent

I froze completely, shielding Clara and my four terrified sons behind my own body.

My private investigator, a man named Vance, kept the heavy shotgun aimed directly at my chest.

I had paid this man millions of dollars over the years to handle my most sensitive corporate espionage.

I now realized he had been secretly reporting my every single move directly back to my father.

Vance coldly ordered us to get into the back of a black armored van waiting at the curb.

Clara clutched my jacket tightly, her entire body trembling as the boys began to cry softly in the dark.

I knew that if we got into that van, none of us would ever see the sun rise again.

I slowly raised my hands in the air, pretending to surrender completely to his absolute authority.

As I took a hesitant step forward, I subtly kicked a heavy glass bottle resting near the edge of a dumpster.

The bottle shattered loudly against the brick wall, causing Vance to flinch and look away for a fraction of a second.

I lunged forward with everything I had and tackled him violently to the wet asphalt.

The shotgun fired wildly into the air, the deafening blast echoing across the quiet neighborhood.

I punched Vance squarely in the jaw, knocking him completely unconscious before he could recover his weapon.

I scrambled to my feet, grabbed the dropped shotgun, and ushered my family frantically into my car.

I slammed my foot on the gas pedal, tearing through the dark streets just as the mercenaries poured out of the apartment building.

We merged onto the highway, heading north toward a secure, off-the-grid cabin I secretly owned in New Hampshire.

For the first time in six years, I looked in the rearview mirror and saw the beautiful faces of my children.

They were perfectly safe, but they were staring at me with immense, heartbreaking confusion.

My phone suddenly began vibrating in the cup holder with an incoming FaceTime call from Sloane.

I answered the call to see what the psychotic woman wanted.

Sloane was smiling a wicked, triumphant smile while standing in the middle of a highly advanced medical facility.

"You might want to turn the car around, Julian, because I just acquired the only supply of your sons' life-saving medication," she purred.
