Chapter 10 - The Empire Reclaimed

The holding cell smelled of bleach and absolute defeat.

Julian sat on the metal bench, clutching his bandaged shoulder, looking up at me with a bruised, pathetic smirk.

"Ten million, Clara," he coughed, leaning against the bars.

"Sign it over, or the clock strikes midnight and you lose the whole empire."

I didn't yell, and I didn't cry.

I simply slid a tablet through the slot in the bars and pressed play on an audio file.

It was the recording I had quietly taken on my phone while he and Chloe were screaming at each other in the warehouse.

Julian’s voice played crystal clear, confessing to money laundering, fraud, and framing me.

Julian’s smirk vanished entirely, his eyes widening in pure terror.

"The police have the kidnapping charges, Julian," I said softly.

"But the FBI hasn't heard this tape yet. If I give them this, you won't get twenty years. You will get life in a federal penitentiary."

I slid the emergency annulment papers through the slot next, followed by a pen.

"Sign the annulment, waive all rights to my assets, and I delete this recording," I told him.

He looked at the tablet, then at the papers, his hands shaking violently.

Without another word, Julian grabbed the pen and signed his name on every single dotted line.

Mr. Harrison snatched the papers back, checking his watch with a triumphant grin.

"Eleven fifty-two," the lawyer announced.

"The annulment is legally binding, and the Vance estate is permanently secured in your name."

I turned my back on Julian without saying a single goodbye and walked out of the police station into the cool night air.

Three months later, my life was entirely unrecognizable.

I stood on the glass balcony of the penthouse suite at Vance Tower, watching the glittering lights of New York City below.

Maya and Liam were laughing in the massive living room, completely safe and blissfully happy.

My twenty-four million dollars was secure, Julian was serving a thirty-year sentence, and Chloe was locked in a maximum-security prison.

I smiled, taking a sip of champagne, feeling absolute peace for the first time in a decade.

We had survived the nightmare, and the empire was finally ours.

But as I walked back into the penthouse to check the mail on the marble counter, I noticed a sealed black envelope.

The return address was written in Aunt Eleanor's unmistakable, elegant handwriting.

I tore it open, my breath catching in my throat as I read the first chilling line.

"My dearest Clara, if you are reading this, they think I am dead, but the real game has just begun."
