Chapter 1 - The Eviction

Mr. Harrison adjusted his silver tie and stared coldly at my husband.

Julian took a step back, the divorce papers trembling slightly in his grip.

Chloe let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh and crossed her arms over her chest.

"This is some kind of sick joke, right, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice cracking.

I pulled Maya and Liam closer to me, feeling their tiny hands shaking in mine.

"It is not a joke," I said, my voice steadier than it had been in years.

"The deed is entirely and legally in Mrs. Vance's name," Mr. Harrison confirmed in a sharp, professional tone.

"You have exactly ten minutes to remove yourselves from her property before these officers arrest you for trespassing."

Chloe’s jaw dropped as she looked from the deed to the two massive security guards.

"Julian, do something!" she shrieked, stomping her foot on the wooden porch.

Julian’s face turned a violent shade of red as he glared at me.

"You think you can just kick me out of my own house, Clara?" he snarled.

"It was never your house," I reminded him, pointing at the suitcases they had packed for me.

"Take my clothes out of those bags, pack your own garbage, and get off my porch."

One of the security officers stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder.

Julian flinched, dropping the manila folder containing the divorce papers onto the welcome mat.

"Fine," Julian spat, grabbing Chloe by the arm and dragging her toward his car.

"But you are going to regret this, Clara."

"The only thing I regret is working night shifts to fund your pathetic life," I yelled back.

Chloe glared at me through the car window as Julian slammed the engine into gear.

As they sped away, Mr. Harrison picked up the dropped divorce papers and sighed.

"Mrs. Vance, we have a massive problem."

I looked at him, my heart suddenly dropping into my stomach.

"What is it, Mr. Harrison?" I asked.

He opened the folder and showed me a secondary document hidden beneath the divorce filing.

"Julian didn't just file for divorce," Mr. Harrison whispered, his face turning pale.

"He filed an emergency injunction claiming you are mentally unfit, and he has already frozen every single penny of your inheritance."
