Chapter 8 - The Hijacked Escape
Gabriel stared at the live video feed in horrifying disbelief.
Someone had hijacked Norah's meticulously planned escape.
The man holding the gun to her head was wearing a black tactical mask.
The background of the video showed stained glass windows and stone pillars.
It was an abandoned church.
Gabriel grabbed the laptop and showed the screen to Dominic.
He demanded to know who the masked man was.
Dominic stared at the screen, his face draining of all color.
He swore he had no idea what was happening.
He said Norah was supposed to meet a private charter plane at a local airstrip.
Gabriel realized that Norah's perfect plan had a fatal flaw.
She had trusted the wrong mercenaries to protect her.
The masked man on the screen suddenly reached forward and pulled the mask off his face.
Gabriel felt the air leave his lungs.
It was Dr. Harris.
The same doctor Gabriel had interrogated in his kitchen that morning.
The doctor smiled into the camera and began to speak.
He explained that he had delivered the babies yesterday afternoon, not last night.
He had helped Norah stage the bloody bathroom to give her a head start.
But he had never intended to let her get away with the master ledger.
Dr. Harris revealed that he worked for the Russian Bratva.
He had tipped them off about the ledger the moment Norah mentioned it.
The Bratva had intercepted her at the airstrip and brought her to this church.
Dr. Harris demanded that Gabriel transfer fifty million dollars into an offshore account by dawn.
If the money did not arrive, he would execute the woman and the children.
He gave Gabriel exactly three hours to comply.
The video feed abruptly cut to static.
Gabriel slammed the laptop shut.
