Chapter 8 - The Gala Ambush

The Scranton Grand Hotel was dripping in opulence. Crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and hundreds of the city's elite gathered to honor Elias Thorne.

Clara, wearing a simple black evening gown borrowed from a thrift store, slipped through the side entrance using a press pass Mark had forged for her. Arthur, wearing his best Sunday suit, walked beside her. His imposing, hardened presence made the security guards look away.

Mark and his camera crew were already positioned at the back of the ballroom.

At 8:00 PM, the room quieted as the Mayor took the stage.

"It is my great honor to present this award to a man who has built the very foundation of this city," the Mayor announced into the microphone. "A man of integrity, vision, and unparalleled generosity. Please welcome, Elias Thorne."

The room erupted into applause. Thorne walked to the podium, beaming, adjusting his expensive tie.

"Thank you," Thorne said, gripping the podium. "When I look out at this city, I don't just see a steel mill. I see family. I see safety. I see a legacy of trust."

"YOU SEE A GRAVEYARD!"

The voice echoed like a thunderclap across the ballroom.

The applause died instantly. The crowd parted. Clara stepped into the center aisle, her head held high, holding a microphone that Mark’s sound guy had discreetly patched into the main PA system.

Elias Thorne’s face went entirely white.

"Security!" Thorne barked into the microphone. "Remove this crazy woman!"

Two guards rushed forward, but Arthur stepped in front of Clara, crossing his massive arms. The guards hesitated.

"My name is Clara Hayes," Clara announced, her voice booming through the speakers, overriding Thorne’s panic. "Ten years ago, my fiancé, David, discovered that Elias Thorne was subjecting his workers to lethal doses of radiation in Sector 4 of the mill. He discovered that Thorne was embezzling millions while the structural integrity of the blast furnaces decayed. And when David tried to expose it, Elias Thorne locked him in a room and burned him alive."

The ballroom erupted into chaotic gasps and shouts. The governor stood up, looking alarmed.

"She's lying! She's a hysterical lunatic!" Thorne screamed, sweat pouring down his face.

"Am I?" Clara asked. She looked back at Mark.

Mark hit a button on the soundboard.

Suddenly, David’s voice filled the massive ballroom, playing directly from the dictaphone recording.

"Clara, if you're listening to this, it means they found me... Thorne hasn't just been cutting corners; he's been covering up lethal radiation leaks... He's paying off the company doctors..."

The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the horrifying truth of a dead man’s voice.

"The complete ledger of Thorne’s embezzlement, his payoffs, and his cover-ups has already been handed over to the FBI, the EPA, and the Philadelphia Inquirer," Clara stated, staring directly into Thorne’s terrified eyes. "It's over, Elias."
