Chapter 2 - The Voice from the Grave

The living room was suffocatingly quiet. Even Leo, sensing the gravity of the moment, sat silently on the edge of the sofa, his small hand gripping Clara’s tightly.

Clara pressed play on the old dictaphone.

There was a burst of static, followed by the heavy, rhythmic hum of factory machinery in the background. Then, a voice filled the room. It was warm, urgent, and undeniably David’s.

Martha gasped, pressing a hand to her heart.

"Clara, if you're listening to this, it means they found me," David’s recorded voice crackled through the small speaker. "I’m hiding in the maintenance tunnels. Thorne’s men are looking for me. I found the master ledger, Clara. Thorne hasn't just been cutting corners; he's been covering up lethal radiation leaks in Sector 4. The men are getting sick, and he's paying off the company doctors to diagnose it as pneumonia."

Arthur’s head snapped up. His best friend at the mill, a man named Joe, had died of "severe pneumonia" eight years ago.

"I confronted Arthur about the structural issues yesterday," the tape continued. Clara watched her father’s face crumble. "He didn't know the extent of it, but he told me to keep my mouth shut. He told me Thorne was too powerful. He was just trying to protect his job, Clara. Don't blame your dad. But I can't stay quiet. I've hidden the physical ledger in the floorboards of my old locker. Locker 42. If I don't make it out tonight... take care of our baby. I love you both so much."

The tape clicked off.

Silence rushed back into the room, heavier and more devastating than before.

Arthur slid out of his armchair and fell to his knees on the living room rug. The tough, hardened steelworker, a man who had never shed a tear in front of his family, broke down into violent, agonizing sobs.

"I told him to leave it alone," Arthur wept, pounding his fist into the floorboards. "I told him Elias Thorne would ruin him. I didn't know... God forgive me, I didn't know they were going to kill him."

He looked up at Clara, his face stained with tears and a decade of misdirected guilt. "And then you came to me... pregnant. And I threw you out. I threw out David's child."

Clara knelt in front of her father. The anger she had carried for ten years slowly began to crack, replaced by a profound, shared grief.

"I couldn't tell you, Dad," Clara whispered. "If I had told you the baby was David's, you would have gone after Thorne. And Thorne would have killed you, too. I had to let you hate me so I could keep us alive."

Arthur reached out with trembling hands and pulled his daughter into a desperate, crushing embrace. Martha dropped to the floor beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them.

For the first time in ten years, they were a family again. But the reunion was entirely overshadowed by the terrifying reality of what came next.

Because Elias Thorne was still the most powerful man in Scranton. And Clara had just brought a lit match into his city.
