Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Three weeks passed. The Thorne Syndicate flourished under Elena’s restructuring. Gabriel’s enemies found themselves outmaneuvered not by bullets, but by airtight legal injunctions and frozen assets. Gabriel and Elena had fallen into a rhythm of dangerous power and undeniable passion.
But the phantom of her past still haunted the numbers.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when Elena found the anomaly. She was tracing a series of old payouts made by Thorne’s predecessor, cross-referencing them with the Moretti family’s public holdings to ensure no overlap.
She paused.
There was a wire transfer. Two million dollars, routed through a Cayman shell company, deposited directly into an offshore account owned by Dr. Julian Vance. The payment was made precisely five days before Vance diagnosed Elena as permanently infertile.
The sender wasn't Gabriel. The IP trace belonged to an encrypted server at Moretti Enterprise Holdings.
Her blood ran cold.
Why would my family pay a doctor two million dollars right before my diagnosis?
A wave of intense, sudden nausea hit her. Elena rushed to the en-suite bathroom, gripping the porcelain sink as she wretched. She splashed cold water on her face, trembling. This was the fourth morning in a row she had been violently sick. She had chalked it up to stress, to the lack of sleep.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her breasts were tender. Her period, usually as punctual as a Swiss watch, was ten days late.
Impossible. Dr. Vance had said the structural trauma was severe. Irreversible.
“There are several possible explanations. An old infection. A congenital condition. Sometimes the body simply fails.”
“Then show me the images.”
“The technical details would not change the conclusion.”
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't go to Gabriel’s physician. She donned a discreet coat, took one of the armored cars with a trusted driver, and went to an independent, non-syndicate clinic on the south side of the city under a fake name.
Two hours later, she sat in a sterile examination room, holding a piece of paper that carried the weight of the world.
Positive. Estimated gestation: 4 weeks.
She was pregnant. She had conceived during those first three chaotic, passionate days with Gabriel.
The infertility wasn't a tragedy. It was a fabricated lie. A two-million-dollar lie.
But why? Why would her own parents pay a doctor to falsely brand her as barren?
She raced back to the estate, her mind calculating variables faster than any supercomputer. The Rossi marriage. If she married Julian Rossi and produced an heir, the Moretti and Rossi syndicates would merge into an unstoppable monolith. Who benefited from stopping that merger? Who benefited from sending Elena to Gabriel Thorne instead?
She dug back into the files, hacking into her father’s private ledgers. The truth unspooled like a venomous serpent.

Her father hadn't sold her to Gabriel to secure borders. Silas Moretti had secretly sold the distribution networks to a Colombian cartel. To cover his tracks, he needed Gabriel Thorne dead. Sending Elena as a "truce" was a Trojan horse. Silas knew Gabriel’s lieutenants would never respect a boss who married a barren, disgraced woman. Silas was actively funding a coup within Gabriel's ranks, planning to assassinate Gabriel and use Elena as the scapegoat.
They killed her future. They lied to her face. And now, they were coming for her husband.
