Chapter 3 - The Confession

The cold steel of the blade dug just slightly into the soft skin of Evelyn's neck.
She swallowed hard, feeling the razor-sharp edge against her racing pulse.
"I don't know who set the bomb!" she cried out, her voice echoing into the empty tunnel.
Lorenzo's dark eyes narrowed dangerously as he pressed the knife a fraction of an inch closer.
"You slipped me a note detailing a trap perfectly designed to kill me," he murmured.
"Someone handed it to me in the coatroom just before my shift," she blurted out quickly.
Lorenzo didn't move the blade away.
"Who was it?" he demanded, his breath hot against her freezing face.
"A man in a gray trench coat with a terrible scar across his left eye," she answered, tears streaming down her face.
Lorenzo's entire body went absolutely rigid.
He slowly lowered the knife, the color draining completely from his usually composed face.
"That is impossible," Lorenzo whispered to himself.
Evelyn took a deep, shaky breath, nervously rubbing her neck where the blade had rested.
"He told me to put it under your glass exactly at eight fifty-two," she explained.
Lorenzo turned his back to her, staring blankly into the dark abyss of the tunnel.
"The man with the scar is my older brother, Julian," Lorenzo said, his voice entirely hollow.
"But Julian died in a fiery car crash three years ago."
Evelyn froze, realizing the horrifying magnitude of the conspiracy she had just stumbled into.
Before Lorenzo could say another word, the sound of splashing water echoed softly down the tunnel.
Someone was walking purposefully toward them in the dark.
Lorenzo immediately raised his silenced pistol and aimed the bright beam of his flashlight forward.
A solitary figure stepped calmly into the circle of light.
It was a man wearing a gray trench coat, dripping wet from the subway runoff.

He raised his hands slowly, revealing a jagged, ugly scar stretching entirely across his left eye.
"Hello, little brother," Julian smiled, stepping completely out of the shadows.
