Chapter 2 - The Psychiatric Hold

Marcus walked fully into my hospital room and closed the door behind him.

He looked at the doctor with a cold, intimidating glare that made her take a step back.

"My brother is a good man dealing with a severely hysterical wife," Marcus said smoothly.

The doctor clutched my medical chart to her chest.

"I have physical proof of torture and a verbal confession," she argued bravely.

Marcus chuckled and reached into his uniform pocket.

"You have a woman who slipped on laundry detergent, and a husband who was making a dark joke in a moment of stress," he corrected her.

He pulled out a folded piece of official legal paper and slapped it onto my bed.

"Furthermore, Daniel has just enacted emergency medical power of attorney due to his wife's psychiatric breakdown."

I stared at the paper in absolute horror.

Daniel had legally declared me insane while I was unconscious.

"You cannot do this, I am perfectly sane!" I screamed, the pain in my spine flaring violently.

"She is a danger to herself, and we are transferring her to a private psychiatric facility immediately," Marcus stated.

The doctor looked at me, her eyes filled with genuine terror because she knew she was completely outranked.

Marcus opened the door, and Daniel walked in holding a folded wheelchair.

Daniel smiled at me, a wicked, victorious grin that promised endless agony.

"Let's go home, sweetheart, we have a lot of work to do," Daniel whispered.

He reached out to grab my bruised arm and haul me out of the bed.

Suddenly, the hospital room door slammed open so hard it cracked the drywall.

My older sister, Emily, stood in the doorway breathing heavily.

"Take your hands off my sister right now," Emily demanded.

Daniel rolled his eyes and scoffed at her.

"This is family business, Emily, go back to your lonely apartment," Daniel sneered.

Emily did not back down.

She pulled a small black device from her purse and pressed a button.

A loud, piercing alarm began echoing through the entire hospital wing.

"I just pulled the fire alarm, and the fire department is not on your payroll, Marcus," Emily smiled fiercely.

Chaos erupted in the hallway as nurses and patients began evacuating.

In the confusion, Emily rushed to my bed and pulled me onto my feet.

"We have to run now," she whispered in my ear.

We stumbled out into the crowded corridor, losing Daniel and Marcus in the sea of panicked people.

We reached the emergency exit stairwell and pushed the heavy metal doors open.

But waiting for us at the bottom of the stairs was a man in a dark suit holding a syringe.
