Chapter 8 - The Siege Begins

Blinding red emergency lights flashed aggressively, bathing the concrete bunker in a sinister, bloody glow.

"They are actively breaching the outer garage doors," Darian stated, forcing himself off the examination table.

He swayed dangerously on his feet, but pure adrenaline kept him standing upright.

Nadia rushed forward to support him, feeling the intense heat of his fever radiating through his bandages.

"You can't fight them in this condition," Nadia argued frantically.

"I don't have a choice," Darian replied, moving stubbornly toward a heavy steel weapons locker.

He punched in a complex code, and the doors swung open, revealing a massive arsenal of military-grade firearms.

He tossed a loaded, heavy pump-action shotgun directly to Nadia.

She caught it easily, pumping the action with a loud, satisfying, intimidating crack.

Darian raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed by her natural familiarity with the deadly weapon.

"South Ward?" he guessed, a hint of respect in his tone.

"South Ward," she confirmed grimly, stepping into a defensive stance.

Darian grabbed a fully automatic assault rifle and two extra magazines, limping toward the barricaded security door.

"Pendleton's men will try to blow the hinges off first," Darian instructed calmly.

"When the door drops, we give them absolute hell."

Nadia positioned herself carefully behind an overturned metal desk, aiming the shotgun directly at the entrance.

A massive, deafening explosion suddenly rocked the very foundation of the warehouse.

Dust and concrete debris rained down from the ceiling as the heavy steel door was violently blown completely off its hinges.

Thick grey smoke poured into the bunker, obscuring their vision entirely.

"Fire!" Darian roared, unleashing a relentless hail of bullets directly into the smoke cloud.

Nadia pulled the trigger, the powerful kickback of the shotgun bruising her bare, delicate shoulder.

She heard horrifying screams of pain from the corridor as their blind fire found its human targets.

Three heavily armored mercenaries pushed aggressively through the smoke, their weapons blazing.

Darian took down two of them, but his severe abdominal injury slowed his usually perfect reflexes.

The third mercenary raised his weapon, aiming directly at Darian's unprotected head.

Nadia didn't hesitate for a single second.

She stepped out from her cover and fired a devastating blast at point-blank range, dropping the man instantly.

The immediate threat was cleared, but the terrifying sound of more footsteps echoed loudly outside.
