Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The ruined bunker fell into a dead, suffocating, incredibly tense silence.

Darian slowly lowered his weapon, staring intently and suspiciously at Nadia.

He did not ask the question aloud, but it hung heavily and dangerously in the air between them.

Nadia shook her head frantically, forcing a look of complete, terrified innocence onto her face.

"I have absolutely no idea what he meant," Nadia said, her voice shaking just enough to be completely believable.

"I am just a maid, Darian."

Darian studied her for a long, agonizing moment, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

Finally, he sighed heavily and reached for his secure, encrypted radio.

He switched to a hidden frequency known only to his absolute most loyal, vetted men.

"This is Costa," Darian spoke into the receiver with renewed authority.

"I need a clean-up crew and a full, heavily armed escort at the Pier 4 safe house immediately."

Within twenty minutes, three armored SUVs pulled safely into the warehouse, securing the perimeter entirely.

Darian's most trusted enforcers flooded the bunker, ensuring the immediate threat was permanently neutralized.

Darian sat heavily on the examination table, letting a trusted combat medic tend to his wound properly.

He looked over at Nadia, who was sitting quietly in the corner, covered in soot and dried blood.

"You fought like a seasoned, trained soldier tonight," Darian told her, his voice full of genuine, profound respect.

"I promise you, I will protect you from Pendleton, and I will pay you ten times what I owe you."

Nadia offered a small, exhausted smile, looking incredibly relieved and grateful.

It truly felt like a hard-fought victory, a beautiful moment of survival against impossible odds.

"I am going to wash my hands," Nadia whispered, pointing toward the small adjacent bathroom.

She stepped inside and closed the heavy steel door, locking it silently behind her.

She turned on the faucet, watching the blood and grime swirl down the metal drain.

Then, she reached into the hidden lining of her plum silk dress and pulled out a tiny, encrypted burner phone.

She dialed a secure, untraceable federal number and waited for the click on the other end.

"Agent Nadia," a cold, professional voice answered immediately.

"The operation was a complete success," Nadia reported smoothly, staring at her own cold reflection in the mirror.

"Darian trusts me completely now, and I finally have full access to his inner circle."
